1985 transmimssion

Hey guys. Just bought a 1985 GLX-i Cressida, its in really good nick and the engine doesnt blow smoke, leak oil or make any noise. The interior is also very very nice. I live in canberra at the moment jsut moved from queensland after finishing school and got work here. I drove the Cressida to the coast on friday which was about at 2 and half hour drive. and was half way home the next day and the transmission stuffed up on it. Wasnt making any noises that i could hear and just fealt like it had clicked into nuetral. Anyone know what could of possibly happened ? The NRMA guy said it was fucked but i thought he was a but of weirdo seeing he suggested to me that i should get the car crushed and that it would cost me too much to get it fixed. I have got a quote for a new/second hand transmission for 400 bucks and the guy will put it in for 150 bucks.... Anyone know what would actually be wrong with the transmission before i go and buy this new one ?? thanks guy

Yeap, your tranny is baked, time for a new one. I believe that the "weirdo" meant that your car is 23+ years old and a reman unit will cost more than what the car is worth, but saying that, if you like the car and you dont mind spending some money on it, go ahead and enjoy it. But in the end, right now. your tranny is done. you will need to replace it. best of luck

yeah its toast. mine just gave out too. it was pouring fluid out of where the driveshaft goes in which means that the rear main seal is gone and i was just driving and it gave out on me. so im probably doing a 5-spd swap now :-D
