Question type: General

The engine in my Honda CRV 2002 needs replacing due to streached cam chain and bent valves, does anyone know of any problems in replacing it with a 2006 engine, same model number?

According to Consumer Reports (CR), the CR-V was redesigned in 2002 and not redesigned again until 2007...So, assuming you're swapping the exact same engine, I don't see where there would be any issue doing so. One thing strikes me as unusual though...there seem to be 2 different 2.4L engines with VERY slightly different HP? AND 2 different auto trans? Specs as listed in CR: 2.4-liter 4 (156 hp), 2.4-liter 4 (160 hp) 4-speed automatic, 5-speed automatic, 5-speed manual.

Glad I could help, ashleyf33! So you bought the 2006 engine and it'll cost you $2,000 to ship it? ..or was that the engine price +shipping cost? Hope the installation cost is reasonable. You must really like the CR-V to be doing all of this! It is a good SUV though...I was looking at it when I was SUV shopping earlier this year for a 2nd vehicle. Good Luck with it! :)

No, not $2000 to freight, 2000 kilometres to get it here :) But its all under control now, it is being driven here in a van with tools and mechanics included, so hopefully all goes well! I do really like the car and have never driven it, definately worth fixing as it has all the extras. Thanks again!

The 2002-2006 were the same body style and considered the 2nd Generation of the CR-V. They all used the same 2.4 liter, 4 cylinder, code: K24A1 engine. But the 2005-2006 model used a Drive-by-wire (DBW) throttle control and changed to a CAN bus system for the OBD-II engine management. The 4-speed Automatic transmission was also upgraded to a 5-speed in the 2005 model year. The transmissions are unlikely to interchange due to the different electronics. The engines from 2002-2004 to 2005-2006 'should' interchange if the the intake / throttle body, and harness are reused from the original car. But I have no proof. Also, the Honda Element is very similar and may also be a swap candidate for the CR-V.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_CR- V#Second_generation_(2002%E2%80%932006)

Ima fiancé and I work rural mail routes and use these for our job. Stop and go 500+ times a day. She has a 2003 which needed a motor rebuild. So I purchased a 2006 with a bad trans and figured I would rebuild the motor and swap it into her car. I can vouch that the throttle body / intake manifold from the original car must be used. I did however develop issues with the transmission after the swap. Transmission shifted beautifully with no hiccups and would get up to speed easier before the swap. Now she seems to not really want to shift into the next gear without some peddle love, takes a bit to get up to speed, and appears to run at a higher rpm? Weird.
