I have 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse with 75k miles on it. When I start it, it takes 3-5 seconds to start it and makes a extremely loud noise while starting it.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I go to start it, it doesn't turn over right away and
makes a terribly loud noise. Just when I'm starting it.
Once it's started, there's no loud noises and runs fine. I've
also had problems with my battery connector but I got
that fixed. Does anyone have any idea what it could be?
I've been told that it could possibly be a cracked flywheel
or the battery isn't putting out enough. Also my service
engine soon light is on. Help!

It almost sounds like a starter issue... if you do remove it to look at it check the gear teeth to see if they're grinding.

I’m having the exact same problem with my 06 Eclipse too I went in yesterday to get a new battery to see if it would fix the sound but it didn’t, so now I know for sure that it’s my starter. I’m thinking that it’s rubbing on something but I’m not too sure. Also the check engine soon light could potentially be your catalytic converter, my light is on too and that’s what the reader told me it was. The mechanic told me it could just be my o2 sensors though.

My eclipse used to have a very loud screeching noise when I first started it. I replaced all of the tensioners and the pulley. While I was at it I replaced the serpentine belt and the water pump and the other belt.
