over heating

i have an 02 mazda protege lx. i was driving down the highway at 60 and it died and kicked at the same time then the temperature gauge shot up to hot. i have no idea where to begin on this problem

I had the same issue but the heat in my case is caused by bad thermostat so I replaced it since then it is working great. Check if the thermostat is in a good shape, it could be also an issue with a head gasket or radiator. Check all of those before you Barbecue your engine.
