not sure when it happened, but just looked at the buttons above the stereo on my 2000 v8 and the left side of the button pannel is pushed in (fuel, status, reset) past flush with the trim panel. dealer wants to charge $300 to fix. Any ideas?

The panel where the status bar and AC vents is located needs to be pried open. It is clipped in. I will bet the status bar is broken at the screw joint on the side that is pushed in. I took it apart and superglued the plastic piece that was broken and reattached the staus bar and everything works fine
