I just bought a 1993 Lexus SC400 how do I repair the gas gauge, it is not functioning?

there are some wires coming out of the gas tank ...this is for your gas gauge....put a voltmeter on these to see if they are actually varying...like a variable resistor~ could look up the resistances they should be...the important thing is that they are not an OPEN circuit...that would mean that the sender is a dud...the other possibility is the dash instruments have gone off because of insufficient grounding....the end of the black battery cable as it attaches to the chassis needs to be wirebrushed till shiny to establish GOOD ground to the chassis, instrument panel...injection system and ignition timing~
