What would cause my Crown Victoria to have a big boom to knock off the mufflers

Asked by Annette May 03, 2015 at 12:27 PM about the 1986 Ford Crown Victoria

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

the car was having a problem staying running or it would just shut off when you stopped.
So we replaced the wires and spark plugs. Basically a tune up. And next thing I knew
there was a loud explosion sound. I am not sure what happened? Can anyone help?

Bad plug replacement, wrong gap to plugs, misfiring occurs when the firing order of plugs is wrong. Some years were recalled for fuel system problems and fires to the engine. Check ford recalls and appropriate manual for your car.

If you havery coil packs I doubt you have wrong firing order. Secondly the car had an obstruction or blockage caused back up pressure then an ignition and boom. Does it run without the numbers fine if so then no problem. If not then yeah you have a problem. You gap is .54 I believe and most plugs are if for this car at least mine email Were spot on gap out of the box. Old numberschool may have changed but 104 not 103 hot plugs. Not cold plugs is right accel. Same as orig.

This is the Internet could be wrong. Sorry you said wires. Still question remains does it run fine without the mufflers or not if so no problem.
