1987 e24 automatic transmission

Automatic transmission won't go into gear. It worked perfectly yesterday when I drove the
car. Now this morning when I put the shifter into any gear, nothing happens. Any ideas on
what may be the problem?
Not Active
could be low on trans fluid , must be checked when engine is at opperating tempature 180-200 degrees.
