is there a problem with 2003 honda civic automatic transmission?
I have seen references to a problem with the 2003 Honda Civic automatic transmission......what have you heard?
My transmission just went free i can't engage any gears at all, the Mechanic just adviced me to get another gear box and it could cost around USD $
700 to $ 800. Please if anybody in this club has an Autmatic Trasmission for the Civic 2003 EX or where i can find one Please do let me know.
i have a 5-speed AT with overdrive on my 96 civic...pops out a lot when on 3rd...btw these 1st gens are also the first civics to have AT... i have the same problem...might be coz of an obsolete gearbox...brand new replacements are hard to find and maintenance on transmission alone costs me around $650+ (already converted from philippine peso)...
most honda's have bad third gear, just know the proper maintenance and you'll be able to keep it....get the fluid changed at the right time....every 10000? 30000? cant remember
It's been a week since this problem started, in the begining the gears couldn't engage after a few days they can engage but the response from the second gear to the third is abit weird and i am scared to drive it (specialy in the first lane) How long have you been driving yours with that condition?
According to NAPAFIX abt honda civic 03 when its overheats the 2ed gear burns so it wont engage anymore, so once u see yr civic overheats shut it down and tow it coz u will need an engine and a tranny
it happened in our shop.
it came in for overheat, did tune up and then head gasket everything was ok till we found out that the tranny is not engaging
BEAWEAR
that might explain the popping out and poor response when im on 3rd gear......i had a lot of problems with overheating before...and i am driving a 96, not a 03 civic...more expensive maintenance coz its AT...so thats why...
Well so far i haven't had any overheating problem with my Civic, as i was discussing this issue with Mechanics one of them brought up the issue of down shifting(D to D3) at high speed on high revolution(rpm) could this be one of the reasons?
Since this problem came up no repair was done, i was only adviced to purchase another Gearbox by a local mecahnic whom i didn't trust,
after a week i decide to tow the car away from his workshop only to notice that the gears were engaging, at the moment I'm still testing
this car on short distances and there is no problem though i am suspecting a small sound (like a bearing)
@Hany, What do you mean by "BEAWEAR" ?
Thanks guys, you contribution has been really helpfull.
if your gonna make the purchase of another gearbox i suggest going oem to reduce any problems in the future, atleast you will have a peace at mind.
they have them here good price and customer service too with hot spots to help locate and pinpoint parts
