piece broke off at bottom on end of drive shaft

which side did brake it will need to be replaced,a broken pice of axle or drive shaft is bad ,replace asap.

Yes, it's hard to tell what broke based on your description, but it sounds like one of the CV joints went bad. This is not a hard fix but one that should be done ASAP because, besides safety concerns, if your CV joint goes out, you will be stuck somewhere.
