1986 mark 7 odometer out.reads"error" can it be replaced ? other gauges+ trip comp works. help !
the linc dealer spent no time inspecting. simply said to replace whole instrument cluster, which are not made. duh. On two ocaassions it gave an erratic mileage # w/ ign on ;not started. then another reading once running. After that it reads "error" the trip computer on the dash seems to be ok, as well as mpg, avs, etc. speedo, fuel works. worried i will have to practically give away or junk a car i have put thousands into over this. where or how do you get digital instruments?. i can't be the only one with this problem. how the heck do i fix this ??
instrument cluster has to be replaced. buy from salvage yard. if possible ask to have it tested b4 u buy. quality auto parts broker may give u a 30 day warranty. speed-o-tach in n. california can clean up test electrical for $75-150 ; however the odometer cannot be readjusted. no one makes a chip for this.( if u see an ad " chip for lincoln odom, ignore it--they are trying to sell you a used instrument cluster. ) the factory equip/ knowledge is gone. the only expensive alternative is to redo instrument panel and install aftermarket digital gauges, which then could be replace individually if need be. however u will loose your trip computer, mpg, etc.
