Car won't start

The last time I drove I let my car gas get extremely low, now it won't start. I put 5 gallons of gas in it, and tried spraying starting fluid in the intake, although it will run enough to burn off the starting fluid, it will shut back down as soon as it burns it. What would be the best course of action to troubleshoot this problem? Also I tried pushing the gas valve and gas squirted out so I figured the gas pump was doing its job, is that a reasonable assumption?
