1984 elco, 305 engine, 4 barrel carb , v8. New fuel pump, new plugs, new cap rotor, coil has 1/4 spark. Problem is it will not start. Only wen gas is poured in carb. Starts for 30 sec . Then cuts out. Could it be choke?

Stuck float, bad fuel pump, really dirty fuel filter. Filter is inside the steel line on the Carb. Its a cartridge filter about the size of a roll of pennies.

i agree with john's answer but will add 1 more thing, if car has been setting with old gas in tank, have had the fuel pickup tube in fuel tank plug up, has a sock filter on pickup line in fuel tank, will need to drop tank and remove fuel tank sender and clean or remove sock filter, best to replace with new one, helps keep dirt from getting to filter in carb., i have also removed fuel line at fuel pump and remove gas cap and use air hose and blowed from fuel pump side back thru fuel line, will sometime blow out garbage coving sock filter

If you change the filter at the carb inlet (assuming it's a quadrajet) be very VERY CAREFULL not to cross thread the fuel inlet fitting when reinstalling it . In otherwords screw it in with your FINGERS 'till it runs out of threads ,then put a wrench on it to tighten it back up . OH yea one more thing the fuel ine must come off completely so you can get it started back straight (use a 5/8 line wrench on the fuel line fitting and a 1" wrench on the filter nut . crosstheading the fitting WILL RUIN THE CARB MAIN BODY . SO BE CAREFULL ... ONE MORE POSSIBILITY ... If somebody already changed the filter and put it in backwards ( hole in filter to the carb side ) it will starve for fuel also ..... just a thought ... good luck PBN

yea I guess I 'd better make it clear , the spring goes in the carb inlet first then the filter goes in the nut open end first . IE spring goes against closed end of the filter . It sounds stpid ,but I have had to fix this several times back in the day .. PBN

it could also be the needle valve as it was on our 1982 chevrolet silverado carb so the landlord decided to put a different carb on it and its for a bigger motor and it drinks the gas like crazy so we are goin to rebuild the original carb which is a rochester quadrajet 4 barrel
