The special-edition 2012 Scion xB RS 9.0 urban utility vehicle comes equipped with a few unique features not found on the xB Base trim, including Hot Lava exterior paint and a honeycomb-patterned lower grille, as well as exterior badging that illuminates when the driver locks or unlocks the car. Inside, the RS 9.0 receives perforated synthetic suede upholstery with Hot Lava stitching. Along with the Base trim, the RS 9.0 also gets Bluetooth and HD radio as standard features for 2012, along with a 160-watt Pioneer audio system, which includes a subwoofer, a USB port and an electroluminescent screen. In addition, owners can add a newly available 200-watt Pioneer Premium audio system with a 5.8-inch LCD touch-screen display, iTunes tagging and Pandora Internet radio as an option. Standard interior features for the RS 9.0 include sport front bucket seats, remote keyless entry and a tilt/telescopic steering wheel with audio and cruise controls. The rear seat splits and folds down to expand cargo space. Air conditioning, a multi-information display and power windows and door locks also come standard.
A 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine powers the RS 9.0. The engine develops 158 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque, and mates to either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic with a manual shift mode. Fuel economy numbers check in at 22/28 mpg with either transmission. Standard safety features include electronic stability control, traction control and 4-wheel antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist, as well as a full range of airbags and a first-aid kit. Scion also includes its Smart Stop Technology, which automatically reduces engine power when the brake and accelerator pedals are pressed at the same time in emergency situations. Outside, the RS 9.0 displays its unique boxy design, with such features as a rectangular lower front grille, wrap-around projector-beam headlights, pronounced fenders, high sidelines and a squared-off rear end with a chrome-tipped exhaust. Owners can add such options as foglights, a sport muffler, mudguards and a rear wind deflector for a sportier exterior appearance. The RS 9.0 rides on 16-inch wheels, although 17- or 19-inch alloy wheels are available.
