Overview of 2012 Nissan Juke SL AWD By Eric Tallberg
Those folks living in the snow belt and needing a quirky-looking subcompact hatchback with plenty of bells and whistles might want to check out Nissan’s 2012 Juke SL AWD. This flagship trim comes with standard full-time all-wheel drive (AWD), turbocharged power, almost 36 cubic feet of total cargo area and enough bells and whistles to keep that cruise through the crud better than simply bearable.
Outside, this high-end trim sports 17-inch alloy wheels, a power sunroof and power-adjustable mirrors, while the cabin flaunts leather upholstery, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, split-folding rear seats, power windows, remote power door locks and upgraded leather and simulated alloy cabin trim. A leather and simulated alloy tilt-adjustable steering wheel is standard, as are cruise control and a rear-view camera. Auto climate control is again delivered with this top-shelf hatchback, as are Bluetooth hands-free calling and a memory-card-based navigation system.
Entertainment, meantime, is provided via the standard Rockford Fosgate audio set-up, boasting an MP3-capable single-CD player, 7 premium speakers, satellite radio, auxiliary iPod integration and a USB port.
Options for this top-shelf trim meanwhile, include the Sport Accessory Package, which boasts stainless steel exhaust tips, upgraded 17-inch alloy wheels and a rear spoiler, and the Chrome Package, with chrome exterior moldings and body-color mirrors and door handles. An Illumination Package is also available and flaunts enhanced cabin illumination and lighted door sill plates.
Standard power in the 2012 Juke SL AWD remains a turbocharged 1.6-liter inline 4-cylinder engine that puts out 188 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque under the auspices of the standard continuously variable transmission (CVT). It’s a sad fact that the CVT is the sole transmission offering in AWD-equipped Jukes, but this full-time system allows a 50/50 torque split to front and rear axles in normal driving conditions, with power instantaneously diverted from the wheels that slip to the wheels that grip when surfaces get slippery. Finally, the four-banger’s variable valve timing (VVT) allows mileage to be estimated at 25 mpg city/30 highway.
This upper-echelon Juke iteration is also delivered with the standard I-CON system with its D-Mode technology, allowing three driver-selectable settings, Normal, Sport and Eco, that tune throttle and CVT response to particular needs. The Eco mode obviously offers the most economical drive, while the Sport setting offers the biggest driving kick.
Noteworthy standard safety features aboard the Juke SL AWD include 4-wheel antilock brakes (ABS), traction and stability control, front side-mounted airbags, front and rear head airbags, and front head restraint whiplash protection. A remote antitheft alarm also comes standard across the lineup, with this trim-topping 5-door also boasting standard front fog/driving lights and dusk-sensing headlights.
This overview covers the SL AWD trim only.
