Following numerous changes made for the 2011 model year, the only modifications that Lexus made to its IS F high-performance sport sedan for 2012 were to use wider forged aluminum alloy front and rear wheels and offer a new seating color.
The rear-wheel-drive 2012 Lexus IS F is available as a single base trim that comes equipped with a 5.0-liter DOHC 32-valve direct- and port-fuel-injected V8 aluminum block engine with dual variable valve timing with intelligence and electronic intake valve timing married to an 8-speed sport direct shift automatic transmission with manual mode and paddle shifters that makes 416 hp and 371 lb-ft of torque. The EPA estimates the fuel mileage for the IS F, which runs on premium gas, at 16 mpg city/23 highway.
Standard factory equipment for the 2012 Lexus IS F includes air conditioning, cruise control, power tilt-and-slide moonroof with sliding sunshade, aluminum sport pedals, power door locks, power windows, power adjustable exterior mirrors with defoggers, power steering, power tilt-and-telescopic steering column, perforated leather-trimmed steering wheel with mounted cruise and audio controls, perforated leather- and chrome-trimmed shift knob, perforated leather-trimmed interior, 10-way heated power driver's and front passenger's sport bolstered seats including lumbar, electrochromatic auto-dimming inside rear-view mirror, 13-speaker premium sound system with AM/FM radio, automatic sound levelizer and in-dash, single-feed, 6-CD auto-changer, Sirius XM satellite radio with a 3-month trial subscription, USB and auxiliary iPod/MP3/WMA port, Bluetooth HandsFree phone system capability, HomeLink universal transceiver to operate compatible garage, gate, home lighting and home security systems, rear-window defogger, bi-xenon HID headlights with dynamic auto-leveling, LED taillights and 19-inch BBS forged aluminum alloy wheels with summer tires.
Optional equipment available for the 2012 Lexus IS F includes a hard-drive navigation system with color LCD display and available NavTraffic and NavWeather through Sirius XM, a 14-speaker Mark Levinson premium surround-sound audio system, intuitive parking assist and headlight washers.
Several safety and security features come standard for the 2012 Lexus IS F, including eight airbags: driver's and front passenger's advanced airbag system with front passenger's twin-chamber airbag, front seat-mounted side airbags, front and rear side curtain airbags, and driver's and front passenger's knee airbags. Additional standard features include Safety Connect with automatic collision notification, stolen vehicle location, an emergency assistance button and enhanced roadside assistance connectivity with a 1-year trial subscription included, side-impact door beams, collapsible steering column, direct tire pressure monitoring system, 4-wheel power-assisted Brembo antilock disc brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist, Torsen torque-sensing limited-slip rear differential, traction control, vehicle stability control, hill start assist, daytime running lights, integrated fog lights and Vehicle theft-deterrent and engine immobilizer system.
Competing on the same course as the BMW M3, Cadillac CTS-V and Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, the 2012 Lexus IS F finds itself slightly more affordable than the other high-powered luxury sedans in the class, but equal to them when it comes to handling and performance. Revisions to the IS F made in the 2011 model year have carried over, such as a better suspension and more responsive steering, making the Lexus IS F a good overall choice for buyers looking for high performance in a 4- or 5-passenger sedan.
