Overview of 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid By R. Feeman
The 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid sedan receives a new powertrain, which delivers better overall performance and improved fuel economy. The powerplant consists of a new 1.5-liter 4-cylinder i-VTEC gas engine, which serves as the Hybrid's primary source of power. It works in conjunction with a larger, more powerful 23-hp electric motor, which Honda calls an "Integrated Motor Assist," or IMA. Together, the gas engine and electric motor generate 110 hp and 127 lb-ft of torque. That horsepower number is the same as the previous-generation powerplant, but the new engine achieves peak performance at 500 fewer rpm, providing better performance at lower speeds. Torque has increased by 4 lb-ft over the previous version. The Hybrid system also includes a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with a wide drive ratio for improved acceleration and performance at cruising speeds. In addition, the Hybrid receives a new, lighter, more compact lithium-ion battery system, replacing the previous nickel-metal hydride system. Other features of the Hybrid include a fuel-efficient ECON drive mode and regenerative braking. With its updated powertrain, the front-wheel-drive Hybrid now achieves fuel economy numbers of 44/44 mpg.
Standard features for the base Civic Hybrid include automatic climate control, Bluetooth, remote keyless entry, steering-wheel-mounted controls, and a 6-speaker, 160-watt audio system with an MP3/CD player and speed-sensitive volume. The Hybrid also receives Honda's new intelligent Multi-Information Display (i-MID), which occupies a spot in the center stack. The driver-feedback system monitors and displays fuel efficiency information, and handles audio, Bluetooth, and general vehicle information as well. Other standard interior features for the Hybrid include cruise control, a tilt/telescopic steering wheel, and power windows and door locks. Outside, the Hybrid comes equipped with such features as power folding side mirrors, foglights, and auto-off headlights. Safety equipment includes 6 airbags, as well as vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock brakes, electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist. The 2012 Civic Hybrid rides on 15-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires.
This overview covers the Hybrid trim only.
