2012 Chevrolet Tahoe LS Trim Overview

Not counting the Fleet editions, the 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe LS remains the base trim available to the more discerning consumer. Packed with nearly 109 cubic feet of total cargo area and the traditional appearance, comfort and convenience features, this entry-level full-size SUV offers Flex-Fuel V8 performance, trailer-towing muscle and, believe it or not, considering its pickup-truck origins, some surprising agility and ride comfort.

Look for 17-inch wheels, a roof rack, trailer hitch and wiring, step running boards and heated power-adjustable outside mirrors just for starters aboard this truck-based ute, with premium cloth upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, remote power door locks and power windows among its interior assets. Front bucket seats are standard, with available bench front seats making for 9-passenger capacity, all of whom will be ensconced in tri-zone air-conditioned comfort. Cruise control and tilt-wheel steering are conveniently complemented by OnStar Directions and Connections service, while simulated alloy cabin trim accents are enhanced by a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Entertainment, meantime, is provided by an MP3-capable single-CD player with 6 speakers complemented by separate rear audio, satellite radio and a USB port. Finally, Bluetooth hands-free calling also comes standard.

Available packages include a Convenience bundle with remote engine start, power-adjustable pedals, rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera, as well as a Texas/All Star Edition boasting heated front seats, power-folding outside mirrors, 20-inch alloy wheels and heavy-duty towing equipment, including an integrated trailer brake controller. As is traditional, a number of the packaged options are additionally available as standalone add-ons.

Standard power for the rear-wheel-drive-only (RWD) 2012 Tahoe LS is a variable-valve-timed (VVT) E85-capable (FFV) 5.3-liter V8 engine. This peppy powerplant mates with a 6-speed shiftable automatic powerplant (with standard locking rear differential) for 320 hp and 335 lb-ft of torque, 8,500 pounds of trailer-towing muscle and a lackluster 15 mpg city/21 highway. Cylinder deactivation at highway speeds helps a bit with fuel economy, but this big V8 is going to use a lot of gas.

Standard safety features, meanwhile, include 4-wheel antilock brakes, traction and stability control, 3-row head airbags and front side-mounted airbags. Daytime running lights are also standard, as are OnStar emergency services, a post-collision safety system and remote antitheft alarm. Finally, front fog/driving lights and turn-signal-integrated mirrors are available safety options with the Texas/All Star Editions.
