The Base trim of the 2011 Mercury Mariner comes standard with a 2.5-liter Duratec inline 4-cylinder engine. As in the Premier trim, buyers can opt to go with a 3.0-liter V6. The 4-cylinder produces 171 horsepower and 171 lb-ft of torque. The V6 bumps those numbers to 240 hp and 223 lb-ft of torque.

Riders up front in the Mariner get plenty of legroom, but it can be hard to come by in the rear. To make matters worse, some experts feel the back seats themselves are not all that comfortable, especially for a longer haul.
