2011 Lexus LS 460 Overview
The 2011 Lexus 460 is the flagship luxury sedan for Lexus, noted for years by automotive reviewers for refined features and impeccable construction. While there are only minor changes from the 2010 model year, it still merits a mention for its surprisingly low cost compared to other luxury sedans in its class.
Changes for the 2011 model year include a brake override system that is standard on all Toyota and Lexus models. In response to the unintended acceleration issues that dominated the press last year, this system cuts off throttle inputs when the brakes are depressed. The car also has an updated coiled suspension in standard trims and an airbag suspension for all-wheel-drive versions.
The LS 460 comes powered by a 4.6-liter V8 engine that provides 380 hp and 367 lb-ft of torque, enough for sprints from 0 to 60 in just under 6 seconds. Buyers who opt for rear-wheel drive will find EPA estimated economy numbers of 16/24 mpg, while all-wheel drive drops the highway number to 23.
Those aren't the only major options for the 2011 Lexus LS 460, as buyers can also choose between the standard LS 460 and a long-wheelbase version that serves as a roadbound executive jet. The standard model comes with seating for three in the rear, while the LS 460 L provides two bucket seats with the option of massaging, reclining seats and even ottomans.
Standard features for both trims are a sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control coupled with multilevel heated seats for both the driver and front passenger, and a 10-speaker stereo with 6-CD changer and iPod and Bluetooth connectivity. On the exterior, expect heated mirrors, foglights, automatic xenon headlights, and automatic wipers.
While a rear parking camera is standard, the optional Comfort package adds front and rear sensors, a power trunk lid, and power-closing doors, as well as a heated steering wheel and heated rear seats. If you opt for the rear-wheel-drive 2011 Lexus LS 460, you can opt for the Sport package with a tuned suspension, upgraded brakes, and a paddle shifter attached to the steering wheel, along with more performance-oriented tires.
Like other Lexus models, the 2011 LS 460 offers a number of safety options, including side, side curtain, and knee-level airbags for front seat occupants, as well as disc brakes with ABS and stability control. Buyers can also opt for rear side airbags and a pre-collision system that pre-tensions seatbelts and monitors cruise control systems.
Road test reviews indicate that the LS 460 offers stellar interior noise reduction and comfortable seating, although it does not deal well with harsh maneuvering except when equipped with the Sport package. That offers better steering and stronger chassis responses against body roll and other factors.
Perhaps the most interesting feature of the 2011 LS 460 is the optional Advanced Parking Guidance System that takes most of the guesswork out of parallel parking. It, along with the other luxurious features on Lexus's upscale sedan, make it an intriguing choice that comes at a much lower sticker price than its European competitors.
