As a concession to fashion, the beyond-retro, half-ton 2010 Chevrolet Express LS 1500 offers only a choice of exterior colors. As a competent and durable people-mover, however, this full-size, three-door, eight-passenger van concedes very little. Three rows of seating, front bucket seats, air conditioning, AM/FM stereo with two speakers, 217 cubic feet of cargo room with the bulky rear seats removed, and 17-inch steel wheels represent the Express’s standard convenience and appearance amenities. Options include upgraded audio components, power windows and door locks, remote keyless entry, chrome alloy wheels, and trailering equipment, as well as additional seating configurations. Standard safety items include four-wheel ABS, traction and stability control, three-row head airbags, dusk-sensing headlights, and daytime running lights.
Powering this weighty wagon is a standard 5.3-liter variable-valve-timed V8 with E85 capability (Flex Fuel) that’s managed by a standard four-speed automatic transmission. The pairing is capable of 310 hp and 334 lb-ft of torque and will tow some 6,200 pounds of trailer when properly equipped. Mileage, however, has long been a contentious issue with these hefty haulers. Despite some recent tweaks, the rear-wheel-drive 2010 Express LS 1500 still gets only 13/16 mpg.
