2008 Kia Sorento Trims

Base

Avg. Price: $11,526

The 2008 Kia Sorento Base gets a new engine this year, a 3.3-liter, 242-hp DOHC V6. Paired with a 5-speed sequential shift automatic, the engine delivers 228 ft-lbs of torque, averages 16/22 mpg, and can tow up to 3500 pounds with the optional tow hitch.

The compact/mid-sized Sorento Base is a rear-wheel drive SUV, riding on a double wishbone front and multilink rear suspension. Only offered with two rows, rear legroom is a cramped 36 inches, and cargo capacity starts at a mere 31.7 cubic feet. The rear seats do split-fold flat 60/40. A cargo cover, tie-downs, and in-floor storage compartments are standard in the cargo area, and the rear window opens separately from the liftgate. A cargo tray costs extra.

16-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires, 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes, traction and stability control, skid plates, and a tire monitor are all standard safety features for the 2008 Sorento Base. Dual front-side, side curtain for both rows, front knee airbags, and head restraints help garner five stars in crash tests. However, the Sorento Base only rates three stars in rollover tests. Standard equipment includes power windows, locks, and mirrors, a CD player, intermittent front and rear wipers, a tachometer, tilt steering, privacy glass, and four power outlets spread out in both rows and the trunk. A 10-speaker audio system is connected to the CD/MP3 player. Remote start and side step bars are available options.

EX

Avg. Price: $12,721

This rear-wheel drive mid-sized SUV offers the top-line features for a Kia, at a much more affordable price than comparably sized vehicles. The 2008 Kia Sorento EX hits 262-hp with its 3.8-liter DOHC V6 engine and 5-speed shiftable automatic. Torque tops 260 ft-lbs at 4500 RPM. The four-wheel independent suspension combines a double wishbone front and rear multilink suspension, and the SUV rides on 16-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires. Unlike on the LX, 17-inch wheels are not available.

Upgraded features include an 8-way power driver's seat, a trip computer, a compass and temperature display, a garage remote, wheel-mounted audio and cruise control, leather trim for the steering wheel and shifter, and faux wood accents. These join full power features, a security system, remote entry, a CD/MP3 player, a tachometer, and front and rear intermittent wipers. The cargo area holds 31.7 cubic feet and comes with tie-downs, a cover, and in-floor storage compartments. A roof rack is also standard. The 2008 Sorento EX adds a power rear window, which opens separately from the rear door. A luxury package adds a sunroof, heated leather seats, chrome accents, and a 6-CD changer. Other options include remote start, a rear spoiler, and a tow hitch.

An auto-dimming rearview mirror and foglights are added safety features to this SUV that earns five stars in impact tests. Also standard are ABS brakes, electronic brakeforce distribution, traction and stability control, automatic headlights, a tire monitor, front head restraints, and dual front-side, knee, and side curtain airbags.

EX 4WD

Avg. Price: $13,704

Identical to the EX, but with more driving versatility, the 2008 Kia Sorento EX 4WD features a part-time 4WD system that can be used both on and off-road, thanks to high and low-range gearing. Road grip is improved with a limited slip rear differential and center locking differential. Skid plates are standard on this mid-sized SUV with only 8.2 inches of ground clearance. Full-time Torque-On-Demand 4WD is an available option only on the EX. A 3.8-liter DOHC V6 delivers 262-hp and gets 15/20 mpg. Towing power peaks at 5000 pounds with the optional tow hitch. A 5-speed shiftable automatic is the only transmission.

Five-star safety features include traction and stability control, 16-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires, and 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes. Dual front-side, knee, and side curtain airbags for both rows are also standard. Rounding out the package are foglights, automatic headlights, a tire monitor, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The SUV gets three stars in rollover tests.

An 8-way power driver's seat and power rear window are added to the standard power features. Heated mirrors, remote entry, wheel-mounted cruise and audio controls, intermittent front and rear wipers, a trip computer, compass and temperature display, and a 10-speaker CD/MP3 player are all standard. Leather and fake wood trim the wheel, shifter, and console. Power outlets are in both rows and the cargo area, which holds 31.7 cubic feet. It is supplemented by a standard roof rack and comes with compartments, tie-downs, and a cover. Rear seats split-fold 60/40 and feature a fold-down armrest. Options add leather seats in a package that includes a sunroof, chrome accents, a 6-CD changer, heated seats, and dual-zone climate control. Remote start and side step rails are other add-ons.

LX

Avg. Price: $11,075

Like the Base model, the 2008 Kia Sorento LX ditches the 3.8 V6 for a less powerful 3.3-liter, 242-hp DOHC V6 with 228 ft-lbs of torque. As such, towing power has decreased to 3500 pounds. The rear-wheel drive SUV falls somewhere between a compact and mid-size and only comes with two rows and 31.7 cubic feet of cargo space. The 2008 Sorento LX adds more standard features, including cruise control, heated mirrors, remote entry, and a roof rack.

Already standard are a full power setup, intermittent front and rear wipers, a 10-speaker CD/MP3 player, tilt steering, and a tachometer. Storage compartments hide under the cargo floor, which also features tie-downs and a cargo cover. There are two power outlets up front, one in the backseat, and one in the trunk area. Rear seats split-fold 60/40 and feature a fold-down armrest. 16-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires help with traction, and 17-inch wheels are available only on the LX. Skid plates help when the 8.2-inch ground clearance isn't enough. 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, traction and stability control, dual front-side, knee, and side curtain airbags, and front head restraints go a long way in earning top crash test ratings. A tire monitor, and automatic halogen headlamps are also standard in the 2008 Sorento LX.

More options are available to the LX. The 17-inch wheels come in a Sport Package, bundled with side step rails, a rear spoiler, foglights, and leather trim. Other options include leather seat trim and remote start.

LX 4WD

Avg. Price: $11,776

For extra road grip, the mid-sized 2008 Kia Sorento LX 4WD adds a part-time system with both high and low-range gearing. This is good news for off-road fans. Also included are a limited slip rear differential and a center locking differential. The 2008 Sorento LX 4WD also gets the new 3.3-liter, 242-hp DOHC V6 and 5-speed shiftable automatic. 16-inch alloy wheels support all-season tires.

Earning five stars in all but the rollover tests (three stars), the 2008 Sorento LX 4WD comes with 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, traction and stability control, skid plates, and dual front-side, knee, and side curtain airbags for both rows. A tire monitor, daytime running lights, and automatic halogen lamps are also included.

The 2008 Sorento LX 4WD seats four or five in two rows. The cargo area holds 31.7 cubic feet and comes with tie-downs and a rear liftgate that opens separately from the rear window. A roof rack and under-floor compartments add more storage options. Front and rear intermittent wipers, wheel-mounted cruise control, full power features, remote entry, heated mirrors, tilt steering, a tachometer, and a 10-speaker CD/MP3 player are all standard. Options add 17-inch wheels, leather trim, and remote start. To sport things up, you can add side step rails, foglights, and a rear spoiler. An optional tow hitch lets you haul up to 3500 pounds.
