CarGurus Overview

The Touring Prius is new for 2007.  Toyota has added this model to provide a sporty counterpart to their revolutionary hybrid hatchback.  Both models add seat-side and side-curtain airbags to the list of standard safety equipment.  Drivers can expect 60/51 mpg fuel efficiency, regardless of which Prius they choose.

All models come standard with automatic climate control, steering wheel audio and climate controls, a six speaker CD sound system, a trip computer, cruise control, power windows, and keyless entry.  The Touring Prius is differentiated from the base by its 16 inch alloy wheels, xenon headlights and fog lights, a larger rear spoiler, and a special sport-tuned suspension.  Either car can receive the navigation system, SmartKey, and leather seating.

While this model have a more performance-oriented presentation, the suspension is the only mechanical change.  The Touring houses the same 1.5 liter four cylinder engine, coupled with a pair of electric motors.  The inline four produces just 76 horsepower and 82 pound feet of torque by itself, and the electric motor offers a power boost equivalent to 67 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. torque.  Because the power power peaks are different, the cumulative output is 110 horsepower.  Toyota hybrids use a gear-less and clutch-less continuously variable transmission to distribute power evenly through the speed range.

This overview covers the Touring trim only.
