Oh, the gas mileage. This is the number-one complaint of Dodge Durango owners. No one expects any SUV to get good mileage, particularly one that boasts 102 cubic feet of cargo space, a towing capacity of up to 8,900 pounds, and a 5.9-liter Hemi V8 engine. But bless its oversized heart, the Durango is trying. In 2007, along with the regular 4.7-liter, 235-hp V8, the Durango offers as its standard engine (in all 4WD, SLTs, and above) a Flexible Fuel E85-compatible 4.7-liter V8, which gets the same horsepower, but gives drivers the choice of using gas, ethanol, or any combination of both. Still standard in the base model SXT 2WD is the 3.7-liter, 210-hp V6. And still first off the line and barreling down off-road trails like a knife through butter is the 335-hp Hemi V8.
Perhaps also fueled by consumer complaints, Dodge has restyled the exterior of the 2007 Durango, giving it a classier, more angled look. Less sloping, and sharper edges to the hood, grille, and bumpers, plus flush wraparound headlights convey an aerodynamic feel without losing any of its monster attitude. For safety concerns, an electronic stability program, tire pressure monitor, rollover sensing system, anti-skidding, and an ultrasonic rear parking assistant solve some of the issues raised by drivers.
Other new options in the 2006 Dodge Durango include a remote starter, 20-inch wheels, and optional captain's seats in the second row. The Durango has redesigned its floor and electrical system in preparation for the overdue hybrid version in 2008.
