Motor Trend's Truck of the Year, the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD gets some tweaks inside and out, plus a new engine and transmission. The Silverado 3500HD is the one-ton version of Chevy's full-size pickups, and it comes in 2-door Regular or 4-door Crew and Extended cabs. All are available with either 2WD or 4WD and a choice of a short 6.6-foot or long 8-foot bed. Trims range from the utilitarian Work Truck, to LT1 and LT2, and top out with the more upscale and comfortable LTZ. ABS brakes, dual front airbags, Hill Descent Control, and a tire monitor are standard across the lineup. On the 3500 only, there is an option of dual rear wheels.
A new class-leading 6.0-liter V8 is offered in the 2007 Silverado 3500HD, hitting 312-hp in the Work Truck and 353-hp in all other models. An optional turbodiesel version, which is cleaner and more fuel efficient, hits 365-hp with a whopping 660 lb-ft of torque. A new 6-speed Hydramatic auto tran comes with the non-turbo, while the turbo gets a 6-speed Allison, which allows the driver to select gears according to the road.
Towing capacity is up to 12,600 pounds on the 2007 Silverado 3500HD. Other new additions include a choice between a classic pickup interior, with a 40/20/40 split front bench and underseat lockable storage box, or a more luxurious interior with power-adjustable leather seats. A double glove box is offered on all but the LTZ. Rear seats are now elevated for better passenger visibility and also flat-fold with a 60/40 split. On all but the Regular cabs, there is a power rear window. On the outside, the wheelbase has been widened for better stability and more interior space, and the windshield altered for better aerodynamics and reduced noise.
