CarGurus Overview
The 2007 BMW four-door 550i sedan received a few minor updates for the 2007 model year. The 550i's 10-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo system received an input jack for an MP3 player, and a tire pressure monitoring system was added to the lost list of standard features.
New options include a high-definition radio receiver for higher-quality AM and FM radio signals, as well as Night Vision, which displays the road ahead on the 550i's navigation screen using thermal imaging technology.
The 550i was powered by a 360-horsepower, 4.8-liter, double-overhead-cam V8 engine borrowed from the 7 Series. A six-speed manual transmission was standard, while a fully electronic six-speed automatic transmission was available as an option.
Standard features for the BMW 550 include a sunroof, multi-zone climate control, a multi-function leather-wrapped steering wheel, power windows, power door locks, rain-sensing windshield wipers, adaptive headlights and brake lights, and a 10-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo system. Other features include anti-lock brakes, 17-inch wheels, and BMW's iDrive control system with a 6.5-inch display screen.
The BMW 550i is also equipped with Dynamic Stability Control, which adjusts power and braking in emergency situations, and Park Distance Control, which aids the driver in parking. Active Steering, which adapts the steering angle to suit the situation, is available as a stand-alone option.
An optional Sport Package added a sport-tuned suspension, larger 18-inch wheels, a sport steeling wheel, and 20-way-power-adjustable sports seats, among other features.
Drivers tended to heap plenty of praise on the BMW 550, citing everything from its high-performance and responsive handling to its innovative, high-tech mechanics and luxury features as noteworthy. The car's exterior styling remained controversial, however, with some unimpressed by the redesign that took place in 2004. And some drivers noted that the iDrive system, while simplified for the 550, could still be a bit complicated to operate.
This overview covers the 550i trim only.
