Volvo's largest and most luxurious sedan came into 2006 somewhat tired and ready for a rebirth. The scheduled re-design went down in time for the 2007 model year, but in the meantime there were some minor changes for 2006.
The base model 2.5T is in actuality the same as the more expensive trim, except that the latter has All-Wheel Drive. The two-wheel drive affords this trim slightly better gas mileage of 21 city and 30 highway.
New for this year, the following features that were formerly options now come standard on both trims: leather seats, a power sunroof, wood inlays and wood-trim steering wheel, a power passenger seat, watch-dial controls, and alloy wheels. Also new is an additional paint choice, Willow Green.

We tend to think that a Volvo isn't really a Volvo without all-wheel drive. Well, the S80 2.5T AWD puts that "essential" feature on the company's flagship sedan.
But it isn't just any all-wheel drive. It's Volvo's new All-Wheel Drive with Instant Traction, a feature introduced on this car. It wasn't the most attention-getting change, but then it wasn't intended to be a flashy year, with an S80 re-design happening in 2007. With power going to all four wheels, you can expect 20 mpg around town and 27 on the highway.
Another change for 2006 was a realignment of options vs. standard equipment. The purchase of options packages was no longer necessary to get the following amenities: leather, sunroof, wood inlays and steering wheel, watch-dial instrumentation, a power passenger seat, front and rear sport seats, and 17-inch alloy wheels. Willow Green was offered as a new exterior color.
