What A Practical Vehicle! By Tyler

I must admit, at first I didn't know what to expect of the Highlander. It was just a good replacement to our old blazer. I'll just start with the cons of the Highlander, since it's the base model,... Read More

CarGurus Overview

The Highlander is unchanged for the 2006 model year. Buyers may pick from eight different Highlander variations, thanks to a series of engine, drive train and trim combinations.

The Highlander's base engine is a 2.4 liter DOHC  four cylinder engine, generating 155 horsepower and provides 162 pound-feet of torque.  It is mated to a four speed electronically controlled automatic transmission, which sends power to the front wheels on all 4x2 models.  Maximum towing capacity for this model is just 3000 pounds, but the EPA estimate of 22/28 mpg is the best of any non-hybrid Highlander.

Although this is the lowest priced Highlander in the lineup, Toyota is quite generous with features.  Standard equipment on this model includes power windows and locks, air conditioning, a six speaker CD sound system, and keyless entry.  The options list is considerable for a base model. Leather seats, rear seat DVD entertainment system, and an in-dash CD changer are all available add-ons.

The Highlander's car-based qualities continue to make this crossover SUV very desirable.  Owners have frequently praised Highlander for its quiet ride, nimble handling, and strong fuel economy.

This overview covers the Base trim only.
