The 2006 Subaru Legacy 2.5i sedan and wagon sees few changes this year and remains the base model of the popular all-wheel drive vehicle. Sitting on 17-inch all-season tires, it has a 2.5-liter H4 engine that hits 175-hp -- up from last year. It comes with either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic and gets about 22/30 mpg. ABS brakes, dual front, front-side, and front and rear head airbags, and daytime running lights are standard. The AWD comes with a four-wheel independent suspension and a limited slip differential.
As for convenience, the 2006 Legacy 2.5i features power windows, locks, and mirrors, cruise control, keyless entry, a trip computer, CD player, and security system. The wagon features roof rails, intermittent front and rear wipers, a rear spoiler, and holds up to 66 cubic feet of cargo with the 60/40 split-fold rear seats. In the sedan, there is an armrest/trunk pass-through in the backseat. Options add foglights, splash guards, leather trim,a rear spoiler, and a short-throw shifter. Options to the wagon include crossbars, a ski and bike attachment, and cargo net and tray. The all-wheel drive feature is a big favorite of 2006 Legacy 2.5i owners.

The 2006 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Special Edition sedan is the next level up from the 2.5i base sedan, though it features the same 2.5-liter, 175-hp H4 engine and choice of standard 5-speed manual or optional 4-speed automatic transmission. The Special Edition adds an 8-way power driver's seat and a single-pane sunroof (a dual pane comes with the wagon) to the base features. All-wheel drive with limited slip differential, ABS brakes, dual front, side, and head airbags, 17-inch wheels with all-season tires, and daytime running lights are some of the standard safety features.
Other included equipment are power windows, locks, and mirrors, keyless entry, a CD player, cruise control, and a trip computer with temperature display. Rear seats do not fold in the 2006 Legacy 2.5i Special Edition sedan, but do feature an armrest/trunk pass-through. Cargo tie-downs and grocery holders are standard in the trunk, which holds up to 11 cubic feet. A rear spoiler, short-throw shifter, leather trim, splash guards, and electrochromatic rearview mirror are some add-ons. Drivers of the Special Edition sedan like the smooth ride, expert handling, and AWD grip. Front seats are comfortable, but the back seat feels a bit cramped.

The 2006 Legacy 2.5i Special Edition Wagon sits on 17-inch wheels and gets its power from a 175-hp, 2.5-liter flat-4 engine and choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. ABS brakes, all-wheel drive with limited slip differential, a rear spoiler (on the top of the liftgate), and dual front, side and head airbags are all standard.
Power windows, locks, and mirrors, cruise control, a CD player, trip computer, and keyless entry are part of the standard equipment. The trunk area features cargo tie-downs and a cargo cover, and there are many storage compartments scattered throughout the wagon. All-wheel drive comes with a limited slip differential and four-wheel independent suspension. ABS brakes, dual front-side and front and rear head airbags are standard, as are 17-inch alloy wheels, all-season tires, fog lights, and daytime running lights.
The 2006 Legacy 2.5i Limited adds heated leather seats, automatic climate control, and a 6-CD changer to the 2.5i Special Edition's power driver's seat, sunroof, trip computer, temp display, leather trim, heated mirrors, and full power accessories. A rear spoiler, electrochromatic mirror, and garage opener can be added to the 2006 Legacy 2.5i Sedan. Rear seats do not fold down, but do offer a trunk pass-through that doubles as an armrest. The 2006 Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT Limited Wagon combines all-wheel drive confidence with turbo power and sport performance, delivering an all-purpose vehicle for family or outdoor use. A turbo version of the 2.5-liter H4 engine produces 250-hp and comes only with a 5-speed automatic with Sport shift mode. The wagon sits on 17-inch all-season tires and features a hood scoop, rear spoiler, sport seats, and a Momo steering wheel. Other equipment includes limited slip differential, ABS brakes, dual front-side and front and rear head airbags, foglights, mirror turn signals, and daytime running lights. Fuel economy is around 19/24 mpg, noticeably less than the non-turbo Legacy wagons.
A 62-cubic foot cargo space is available with the rear seats folded down. Roof rails are also standard on the wagon, as is intermittent front and rear wipers. Power front seats, full power accessories, keyless entry, cruise control, a trip computer, heated leather seats, leather trim, a CD player, a sunroof, and a security system are included. Tie-downs, storage compartments, and a cargo cover area also standard. You can add an electrochromatic rearview mirror and remote garage opener as options. Good acceleration and confident handling that comes with the AWD are highlights for owners of the 2006 Legacy 2.5 GT Limited Wagon. Downsides are some turbo lag and a small backseat.
