2006 Porsche Cayman S Review
ProsSteering, braking, acceleration, handling, fun ConsNo bluetooth, mediocre sound system, no voice commands for the nav and other systems
35
A Best Buy, I Just Had To Have One. — Best sports car I have ever owned which included Lotus Esprit Turbo, two Corvettes and a Nissan 300ZX. Handling on the road and track (at a Porsche DE) has been excellent. Steering, handling, braking and acceleration is all excellent, although some extra torque at lower rpm would be nice. Ride comfort on a 600 nile trip was quite good, if not at Lexus, BMW or Mercedes sedan level, but its a sports car not a luxury sedan, right? The upgraded Bose system is mediocre, but I would rather listen to the sound of the engine anyway. Needs bluetooth and better Navigation system with voice commands like my wifes Infinity or her former Acura. Hopefully newer versions will fix that. I like the styling even better than its big brother. Pricey, but worth it. Overall great!

ProsHandling ConsCost of ownership

Favorite Vehicle I've Ever Owned — The best handling car I've ever driven. Also the sexiest looking...I recommend full leather interior as an option and get a metallic color. It goes through tires pretty quickly when you drive it how it's intended. But worth every penny in fun. Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)

The Funniest Car I've Ever Driven — The cayman is one of the best looking and best handling cars on the road. I get looks and thumbs up every time I drive it. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a fun car to drive to buy one. The engine is one of the quickest to respond to the foot on the peddle and even in sixth gear the power and quickness is still there. Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)

ProsIt's what the 911 should be. Light, nimble, mid-engine, perfect weight distribution, powerful all all revs, great exhaust note, more fun to drive than should be legal! ConsA little rough of a ride for long trips. Don't expect to take anything back from Home Depot.

I Have Owned Porsches For A Long Time. This Has Been My Favorite... — Best car for the money hands down. You won't find a better driving experience with any other brand and model unless you add a zero to the end of the price. These cars have been extremely reliable for me throughout numerous boxsters, carerras, caymans... All are great as daily drivers and more than great when the road gets twisty. Primary Use: Commuting to work

ProsHandling, styling, the factory short shifter, drove great in the snow (with snow tires) Constoo much factory sound deadening. could use slightly better throttle response and a free-er flowing exhaust.

A Real Driver's Car With A Healthy Dose Of Luxury — Just plain freakin' awesome. You get near base 911 performance (for comparable model years with superior handling. The maintenance was never an issue and build quality was superior with the exception of the "soft touch" plastic coating that car companies use on black plastic parts which eventually peels off. Primary Use: Commuting to work

ProsLooks, handling & engine noise ConsNone

A Very Fun Car That Is Not Overpowering And Easy To Drive Hard — I personally love the looks. Handling & braking performance are excellent. Acceleration is great, but not corvette like. The engine/exhaust sound at the upper end is absolutely unbelievable. The fun factor on a scale of 1 to 10 is a 9. Cost of ownership is what you would expect with a high performance German automobile. Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)

ProsAcceleration, Torque, Interior, Exterior, Mid engine. ConsFuel economy, but what can I expect.

Awesome Car. — Compared to the BMW 330ci Convertible, this is wayy better. The handling is perfect and the torque is adequate. The car pulls you back into the seat when you accelerate. When you want the power, it's their. Even if you are not going over the speed limit, it feels like it in this car. The car proves its space with many storage areas around the driver and passenger. The sound system is great and the seats are quite comfortable. I would highly recommend this car to anyone wishing to enjoy a beautiful ride.

Pros295hp "only" but you feel like you've got 100 more, it's more than just well-built and there's a lot of chance that it will never go wrong. ConsThere's not a sense of passion around that car, and it's a real shame. I couldn't live with it.

Left Me Cold. Not A Good Sign For A Sportcar. — The Cayman S ... another huge disappointment. Yes, despite the lack of a locking rear differential (my God, the tyres suffered on the track), it handles beautifully and with only 295hp it could easily keep up with the Aston, and yes again, it was the most practical of the bunch, along with the Corvette ... Oh, and the interior quality is not a myth ...yep, it is that good! However, it had to many drawbacks to convince me. First, I'm not too sure about the look. It was (see picture) in black, so the color masked some of the lines ... and thank God for that because the other ones I saw in different colors are just ugly. Sorry Porsche, but you need to hire designers that are not blind! Another issue is the lack of sensation. You feel very safe in this car, and the stability control is great: let you slide a little bit before intervening, I loved it. And on the track, it was very, very stable. I spun only once with it ... only because I wanted to. Still, the Gallardo proved that fun could come along with safety and the Cayman S just didn't seem to get that idea. So, I couldn't give it credit for the wonderful PASM (suspension) system or for the best manual gearbox I've ever come accross ... it should have mattered but then it didn't because this car left me cold. The Corvette gave me a nice surprise, the Gallardo was sublime. Even the V8 Vantage irritated me ... The Porsche? Nothing. Just like a daily driver ... a nice one, no mistake, but it's just the type of car that you leave in your garage at night without looking back at it ... so not my type of car.
