The luxury trim of the already lavishly equipped full-size, 8-passenger SUV is the 2006 Nissan Armada LE. The rear-wheel drive behemoth features three rows of seats, with a new 60/40 split-folding third row that allows for a maximum of 97 cubic feet of storage. This year, the 2006 Armada LE gets dual-zone climate control and, exclusive to the LE, power folding mirrors with turn signals. Performance and safety-wise, the SUV comes with a limited slip rear differential, dual front and all-row side airbags, 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes, traction and stability control, brake assist, parking sensors, a tire monitor, automatic headlights, auto-dimming mirrors, skid plates, running boards, and a rollover sensor. A 5.6-liter, 305-hp DOHC and 5-speed auto tran deliver its power.

For family comfort, the 2006 Armada LE builds on the SE by adding heated leather seats, power front seats with driver's memory, remote windows and locks, a power liftgate, and a standard trailer hitch for 9100 pounds of towing capability. New this year is a CD changer/MP3 player, and other features include a compass and temperature display, remote entry, rear audio controls, wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls, and lots of cupholders and storage compartments. A sunroof, DVD player, and satellite radio are options across the lineup, but the 2006 Armada LE can also be equipped with second row bucket seats, a navigation system, and a handy rearview camera. Owners like the power, comfort, room, and the ease of the power liftgate, but wish for better mileage and xenon headlights.

Power and pickup earn high marks from drivers, who also praise the interior legroom and ample cargo room. Aside from fuel economy, there are few complaints about this upscale SUV.

The base model for Nissan's new full-size gargantuan SUV is the rear-wheel drive 2006 Nissan Armada SUV. Powered by the Titan's 5.6-liter, 305-hp DOHC V8 and 5-speed automatic, it seats eight in three rows, and is fully equipped with 4-wheel ABS brakes, traction and stability control, a tire monitor, 18-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tires, dual front airbags and side bags for all three rows, brake assist, parking sensors, automatic headlights, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. A double wishbone suspension, front and rear stabilizer bars, and a limited slip differential provide rugged handling.

New this year are standard dual-zone climate control, and a flat-folding 60/40 split third row. The 2006 Armada SE caters to convenience, with full power features, power driver's seat, power-adjustable pedals, a CD-changer/MP3 player, heated mirrors, intermittent front and rear wipers, rear air conditioning, and wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls. Cupholders and storage compartments are widespread, and the rear liftgate opens independently of the window. Tie-downs are standard, and a trailer hitch (to tow up to 9100 pounds) is extra. Owners love the power of the 5.6-liter, 305-hp V8 engine in the 2006 Armada SE 4WD, and the combination of capable hauler and extremely comfortable family SUV. Poor fuel economy is a drawback.

SE 4WD Off-Road

For those who actually want an SUV that can be taken off-road, the 2006 Nissan Armada SE 4WD Off-Road tries to fill that roll. The full-size SUV adds a self-leveling suspension, a center locking differential, and limited slip center differential to the already existing double wishbone suspension, traction and stability control, and front and rear stabilizer bars. The 2006 Armada SE Off-Road also comes with 17-inch wheels and all-terrain tires, foglights, and skid plates, to better handle rough roads. Power comes from a 5.6-liter, 305-hp DOHC V8 and 5-speed auto tran, and the SUV gets 385 lb-ft of torque.

Interior room is spacious, with 41 inches of legroom in the front and second rows, and up to 97 cubic feet of cargo space with the new flat-folding 60/40 third row. The second row also folds. The 2006 Armada SE Off-Road also gets a standard tow package. Features are similar to the SE and include parking sensors, automatic headlights, auto-dimming rearview mirror, dual front and side impact airbags, 4-wheel ABS brakes, a tire monitor, power-adjustable pedals, a new CD changer/MP3 player, new dual-zone climate control, and wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls. The 2006 Armada SE Off-Road adds leather seats, leather trim, and power front seats. Cargo tie-downs and a roof rack are standard, and you can add a power liftgate, DVD player, satellite radio (new this year), and a sunroof. Good power, lots of room, and lots of nice features please owners, but they hate the 14/19 mpg and complain of blind spots.
