The base model Commander was known simply by the model name in its debut year. It would be christened Sport as a sophomore for 2007.
Although it did not include as many bonuses as the Limited, it was still quite nicely appointed, especially with safety features. Every Commander received a full set of air bags, including side-curtain units for all three rows of seating.
Another standard cog in the Commander's safe-travel machine is the Electronic Stability Program, which integrates ABS with traction and stability control as well as electronic roll mitigation. The vehicle earned a full 5 stars in the NHTSA's frontal crash tests (it didn't fare as well in the rollover test, where it only scored a 3).
What sets the Commander apart from other Jeeps, and many other SUVs in general, is its third-row seat. Although the seat is by wide opinion considered quite cramped, it's there and it's not shortchanged as far as amenities. It gets its own climate-control system, and there's even an available set of fixed-panel skylights that illuminate the way-back. They come as part of the package with the power sunroof, an option on this trim.
Other comforts and conveniences on this trim include cruise control, keyless entry, power locks and windows, power-adjustable driver's seat, tilt-wheel, trip computer, and a 5-speed automatic transmission with overdrive.
The default engine is a 3.7-liter, 210-horsepower V6 (235 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm), which may be considered inadequate for such a foreboding SUV. The available 4.7-liter V8, providing 235 horses, was the remedy, turning in 305 lb.-ft. of torque at 3500 rpm.
Optional extras include a navigation system with 6-CD changer (in-dash), the aforementioned sunroof/skylight package, limited slip differentials, remote start, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and heated seats.
Owners of the 2006 Commander had recurrent complaints of wind noise, poor gas mileage, and V6 weakness. As with other Jeep vehicles, the cloth upholstery is said to stain readily, even with mere rainwater. Opinions varied on the quality of the ride and handling and the comfort of the seats. Most buyers of this vehicle were in love with its looks and the simple fact that it's a Jeep and truly looks the part.

Before it was renamed Sport for 2007, the base-level Commander simply used the model name. Its trims were the 4x4 and also a 4x2.
Two four-wheel-drive systems were made available for the '06 buyer to choose from. The Quadra-Trac I, a traditional part-time system for use on loose or slippery surfaces only; the Quadra-Trac II, a full-time active system that could be left engaged on dry pavement. The latter system was an option only in conjunction with the optional V8.
The base Commander may not have been given all of the bonuses of the Limited, but it still came quite nicely appointed with luxuries as well as life-savers. Every Commander received a full set of air bags, including side-curtain units for all three rows of seating, and the Electronic Stability Program, which integrates ABS with traction and stability control as well as electronic roll mitigation. The vehicle earned a full 5 stars in the NHTSA's frontal crash tests (it didn???¢ï¿½?¯ï¿½?¿ï¿½?½??¯ï¿½?¿ï¿½?½?t fare as well in the rollover test, where it only scored a 3).
But the attention-getter on this SUV is its third-row seat. Although the seat is by wide opinion considered quite cramped, it's there, and sometimes that is enough. It has its own climate-control system, and there's even an available set of fixed-panel skylights (with sunshades) for kicks.

Optional extras include a DVD entertainment system, a navigation system with 6-CD changer (in-dash), the aforementioned sunroof/skylight package, limited slip differentials, remote start, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and heated seats.
The 2006 Commander seems to be guilty of wind noise, poor gas mileage, and V6 weakness. As with other Jeep vehicles, the cloth upholstery is said to stain readily, even with mere rainwater. The Commander Limited 4x2 makes a great choice for someone who wants a well-appointed SUV with third-row seating yet doesn't feel the need to have four-wheel-drive to turn to. This could be someone who lives where snow is not a concern, someone who never plans to leave pavement, or someone who lives in a snowy area yet feels the vehicle's 5000 pounds of heft will give it enough of an edge in the white stuff.
Compared to the base-model Commander, the Limited makes an impression with its standard features, as does any Jeep trim called Limited. Leather is standard, with heaters in the front buckets, and a power sunroof/fixed skylight package is thrown in, too. The audio system is deluxe and includes a set-up for Sirius Satellite Radio, with a year's subscription.
The rear seat receives its own separate climate-control system for optimal comfort of those occupants, who we hope are on the short side, as the two-person third row is on the cramped side for sure. It splits 50/50 and folds flat, just as the second-row seat splits in a 40/20/40 configuration.
The 3.7-liter, 210 horsepower V6 standard on the base model left something to be desired, which is why the Limited came standard with a 4.7-liter, 235-horsepower V8 (the optional 5.7-liter HEMI was not available on the 4x2).
Available options on the Limited 4x2 included a DVD-based navigation system with a 6-CD, in-dash changer. The wheels could also be upgraded to 18-inch chrome beauties.

With its full array of bells, whistles, and just plain pretty touches, the Jeep Commander Limited 4x4 is as handsome as it is tough. The Trail Rated seven-seater is a great marriage of passenger space and off-road capability.
That combination of comforts and three rows of seating has resulted in many smiles, especially at Jeep HQ, as the Commander is now a competitor in the large-capacity SUV market. That said, nobody is saying that the third-row seat is roomy; it's clearly more suited to smaller folks, especially on extended rides. But that doesn't mean it gets no respect: Jeep gave it its own separate climate-control system for optimal comfort of whoever gets "stuck" there. The two-person seat splits 50/50 and folds flat, just as the second-row seat splits in a 40/20/40 configuration.
The Limited's roster of standard features creates a pleasant atmosphere, with heaters in the front buckets and a power sunroof/fixed skylight package that every occupant can enjoy. The audio system is deluxe and includes a set-up for Sirius Satellite Radio, with a year's subscription, plus second-row audio controls.
The 3.7-liter, 210 horsepower V6 standard on the base model was not sufficient, so the Limited didn't even bother with it. It came standard with a 4.7-liter, 235-horsepower V8, but the real go-getter was the optional 5.7-liter HEMI V8. This 330-horsepower V8 is a Multi-Displacement Engine, which works by shutting down half of the 8 cylinders during gentle acceleration or highway cruising - below 60 mph.
DaimlerChrysler estimates can conserve gas at a rate of up to 20% when driven in a way that maximizes its function. But that translates to "slow" for most Americans, who aren't accustomed to seeing the needle drop under 70 on their Interstate forays.
Four-wheel drive systems available for the Limited 4x4 were the Quadra-Trac II, a full-time active system that could be left engaged on dry pavement, and the Quadra-Drive II, featuring electronic limited-slip differential axles and suspension stabilizer bars that may be decoupled in the appropriate off-pavement situations. Each system has a two-speed electronic transfer case with low-range gearing for serious off-roading.
The Commander was considered a godsend by the lifelong Jeep-lover who started out driving a CJ and now has a sizable family to transport. Its buyers are generally a satisfied lot, although there have been numerous complaints of wind noise and questionable reliability in the very early-built units. Although they admit they knew what they were getting into, some whine about the lack of fuel economy, yet they have no regrets because, hey - it's a Jeep.

65 years of great vehicles is a respectable milestone, and a milestone makes a fine excuse for a celebration. The 65th Anniversary Edition of the Jeep Commander is that celebration.
It's kind of funny, in that this was the debut year for the Commander, but of course it's the 65th year of Jeep itself that's being commemorated. This special edition is a base model Commander with a special grouping of options.
As such, its standard engine was the 3.7-liter, 210-horsepower V6 (235 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm), with an available 4.7-liter V8, which provided 235 horses and turned in 305 lb.-ft. of torque at 3500 rpm.
Among the celebratory options was the power sunroof with accompanying CommandView Skylights, two fixed panels that extend over and beyond the second-row seat. They included sunshades for times when the kids don't wish to be blinded by the light.
Other notable touches to the big picture were the bright chrome moldings and tow hooks and trim specific aluminum wheels and exterior badging. As special editions often do, the 65th Anniversary Commander came in specific colors: Black, Light Khaki, Dark Khaki, Silver, and Jeep Green.
The interior showed special touches with embroidered "Jeep 65" logos on the cloth seats and floormats, and center console accents that are unique to this limited-edition trim. Fog lamps and a cargo net also came with the package, and the audio system was upgraded from the standard one included with the base model Commander.
Other comforts and conveniences on this trim include cruise control, keyless entry, power locks and windows, power-adjustable driver's seat, tilt-wheel, trip computer, and a 5-speed automatic transmission with overdrive.

Let's be honest here: the only true way to celebrate 65 years of trail-tackling Jeeps is with a 4x4. The Commander 65th Anniversary Edition 4x4 jumped in along with its Trail Rated counterparts in the Jeep line-up to fill that role.
The 4x4 special-edition Commander came with a 4.7-liter, 235-horsepower V8, which turns in 305 lb.-ft. of torque at 3500 rpm. Two four-wheel-drive systems were made available for the trim, which is based on the lower-level Commander but with a desirable grouping of options.
The standard 4WD system, Quadra-Trac I, is a traditional part-time system for use on loose or slippery surfaces only. The optional Quadra-Trac II is a full-time active system that can be left engaged on dry pavement; it was an option only in conjunction with the optional V8.
One of the highlights of the anniversary options is the power sunroof with accompanying CommandView Skylights, two fixed panels that extend over and beyond the second-row seat. They include sunshades for times when the kids (and that's just who the undersized third-row seat is suited for) don't wish to be blinded by the light.
Nice visual touches were provided by the bright chrome moldings and tow hooks and trim specific aluminum wheels and, naturally, special 65th Anniversary badging.
Additional amenities on this trim include cruise control, keyless entry, power locks and windows, power-adjustable driver's seat, tilt-wheel, and a trip computer.
