As if it needed more power, the 2006 GMC Sierra 2500 boosts its 6.6-liter, turbodiesel Duramax V8 to 360-hp and 650 lb-ft of torque, putting it well above the 8.1-liter, 340-hp V8 that gets 455 lb-ft of torque. Both engines come with either a 6-speed manual or a new 6-speed Allison 1000 automatic that is both quieter and puts out less emissions. The standard engine remains a 6.0-liter, 300-hp V8 matched to either a standard 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. The 3/4-ton pickup comes in either rear-wheel or part-time four-wheel drive in Regular (one split-folding front bench), Extended, or Crew Cabs (two rows of seats, with split-folding rear seats). An 8-foot bed accompanies the Regular Cab, while a 6.5 or 8-foot bed comes with the Extended and Crew Cabs.
Also new this year are the trim designations, which now number five. The Work Truck is minimally equipped, while the new SL1 adds cruise control and a CD player. The SLE1 and SLE2 add power features, power front seats, and foglights, and the upscale SLT combines work function with family-friendly comfort by adding heated leather seats, memory settings, upgraded audio system, and retractable mirrors, which are new this year. All trims feature ABS brakes, 16-inch wheels, automatic headlights, and dual front airbags, and the 2006 GMC Sierra 2500HD earns three stars in crash ratings.
Towing capability is what this truck is known for, and when equipped with either the Duramax or the 8.1 V8, this pickup can tow up to 12,000 pounds with minimal effort. The bed features plenty of tie-downs, and a cargo cover and bedliner can be added. The new Allison automatic, in combination with the beefed up Duramax is a big hit with owners, who are awed by its hauling performance. Other pluses include a surprisingly quiet and smooth ride, a roomy interior, and acceleration. There are complaints about the bland interior materials and the wide turning radius.
