CarGurus Overview

2006 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT Crew Cab 4WD 5.8 ft. SB

A nice blend of family truck and utility pickup, the 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT Crew Cab 4WD features on-demand four-wheel drive with high and low-range gearing for off-road performance. It is coupled with a center locking differential, 8.7 inches of ground clearance, and 17-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires. For those intending more rugged use, there is the option to add a locking rear differential, larger 20-inch tires, an adjustable suspension, and skid plates. The Crew Cab comes with a 5.8-foot bed equipped with tow hooks. An optional trailer hitch lets you haul 10,000 pounds with the 5.3-liter V8. Paired with a 4-speed automatic, this engine gets 295-hp and 335 ft-lbs of torque at 4000 RPM. A more powerful 6.0-liter, 345-hp V8 can be substituted.

That's the utility. Now for the family comfort. The cabin seats five in two rows, with front bucket seats and a split-folding rear bench. Legroom is nearly 40 inches in the backseat. Moving to the SLT means the added luxury of leather upholstery, and heated power front seats with driver's memory settings. Other upgrades include wheel-mounted audio controls, a CD-changer with MP3 jack, and a trip computer. Carryovers from the SLE2 include a full power setup, heated extendable mirrors with turn signals, cruise control, remote entry, intermittent wipers, a temperature readout and compass, and a front power outlet. Those craving even more can add a DVD player, sunroof, satellite radio, and automatic climate control. A sliding manual rear window is also available.

The 2006 Sierra 1500 SLT Crew Cab 4WD receives middling crash test scores, perhaps due to the lack of airbags. You'll find only dual front ones with passenger deactivation. Four-wheel ABS brakes come with electronic brakeforce distribution, but traction control is not offered on 4WD models. Automatic headlights, auto-dimming mirrors (inside and out), halogen lamps, and foglights are part of the standard package. OnStar is optional.

2006 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT Extended Cab 4WD 8 ft. LB

With the 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT Extended 4WD LB, you get a longer 8-foot pickup bed (a result of the longer 149-inch length), and an on-demand 4WD system that can be driven both on and off-road, thanks to both high and low-range gearing. Accompanying the system is a locking center differential and 17-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires, but you might want to add the optional skid plates (less than 9 inches of ground clearance), driver-adjustable suspension, 20-inch wheels, and locking rear differential. A 5.3-liter V8 and 4-speed automatic are standard and offer up 295-hp and 335 ft-lbs of torque at 4000 RPM, with just under 10,000 pounds of towing capacity. It is available in flex fuel format. A 345-hp, 6.0-liter V8 is also optional. Fuel economy averages 16/20 mpg.

The bed in this half-ton pickup comes with tow hooks. A trailer hitch is optional, as is a manual sliding rear window into the cabin. Front bucket seats and a split-folding rear bench seat five, though rear passengers get less than 34 inches of legroom. There are four doors, but the rear ones are not full-sized and do not open separately. Moving up to the SLT gets you leather upholstery, heated power front seats with driver's memory settings, wheel-mounted cruise and audio controls, a 6-CD changer, reverse-tilt mirrors with turn signals, and a trip computer. Full power features are already standard, along with remote entry, leather trim, intermittent wipers, a front power outlet, heated extendable mirrors, tilt steering, and a compass and temperature display. Options add a sunroof, satellite radio, and automatic climate control.

Safety features are limited, and the 2006 Sierra 1500 SLT Extended 4WD gets average crash test ratings for this reason. Dual front airbags come with passenger sensors, but no side curtain bags. The front disc, rear drum, and 4-wheel ABS brakes feature electronic brakeforce distribution. The SLT adds an auto-dimming function to all mirrors inside and out. Automatic headlights, halogen lamps, and foglights help light the way. Giving drivers more comfort is the optional OnStar.

2006 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT Extended Cab 4WD 6.5 ft. SB

An on-demand 4WD system in the 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT Extended Cab 4WD SB pickup comes standard with a locking center differential, 17-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires, 8.7 inches of ground clearance, and both high and low-range gearing for off-road use. You can improve performance by adding larger 20-inch wheels, a driver-adjustable suspension, a locking rear differential, and skid plates. Traction control is not an option. The half-ton pickup can tow up to 10,000 pounds with an available trailer hitch, though tow hooks are standard.

Power comes from a 295-hp, 5.3-liter V8 and 4-speed automatic transmission, while the short and long arm front and solid live axle rear suspension take care of handling. This pickup is 230 inches long (ten more than the 5.8 SB), which means a longer 6.5-foot bed. It seats five in two rows, with the rear bench split-folding. Legroom tops out at 33.7 inches in the back, and access is through half-size reverse-hinged rear doors. The SLT upgrades standard features to include front power seats with driver's memory settings, heated front seats, leather upholstery, a trip computer, a 6-CD changer with MP3 jack, and wheel-mounted audio controls. Also on hand are full power features, including remote entry, cruise control, and heated extendable mirrors. A tachometer, compass, and temperature display sit on the dash. Intermittent wipers, a front power outlet, reverse-tilt side mirrors, and an auto-dimming function for all mirrors are also standard.

The lack of airbags may indicate why this pickup only gets three and four stars in crash tests. Standard safety equipment is limited to dual front airbags with passenger deactivation, front disc and rear drum brakes, four-wheel ABS brakes, a front stabilizer bar, foglights, mirrors with turn signals, autoamtic headlights, and halogen lamps. OnStar is optional. Other options include satellite radio, a sunroof, automatic climate control, and a manual sliding rear window. Also available is a 6.0-liter V8 that gets 345-hp, and a flex fuel version of the 5.3 V8.

2006 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT Extended Cab 4WD 5.8 ft. SB

The 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT Extended Cab 4WD 5.8 is a half-ton pickup with a 5.8-foot bed. It is the smallest of the Sierra 1500 series, but also one of the most high-end in terms of convienence features. The on-demand 4WD system operates both on and off-road, thanks to high and low-range gearing and a center locking differential. A rear locking differential costs extra, as do skid plates and an adjustable suspension. The 17-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires can be replaced with larger 20-inch wheels. Powering this pickup is a 295-hp, 5.3-liter, 16-valve V8, offering 335 ft-lbs of torque at 4000 RPM. It gets 16/20 mpg and tows 8700 pounds. Tow hooks are standard and a trailer hitch costs extra.

The pickup seats five in front row bucket seata and a rear split-folding bench. The four doors include smaller reverse-hinged rear doors. The 2006 Sierra 1500 SLT Extended 4WD 5.8 delivers leather upholstery, heated front seats, power front seats with driver's memory settings, a trip computer (along with a tachometer, compass, and temperature display), and wheel-mounted cruise and audio controls for the 6-CD changer with MP3 input jack. Satellite radio is optional. Tilt steering, intermittent wipers, a front power outlet, a security system, leather steering wheel trim, heated mirrors, remote entry, and a full power setup round out the package. An auto-dimming feature is standard on all mirrors, and the side mirrors now sport turn signals and can reverse-tilt.

Keeping things relatively safe are dual front airbags with passenger deactivation, a front stabilizer bar, and four-wheel ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution. Lighting the way are halogen lamps, automatic headlights, daytime running lights, and foglights. OnStar is available, but traction control is not on 4WD models. Other nicer options include a sunroof and automatic climate control.

2006 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT Crew Cab 5.8 ft. SB

The 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT Crew Cab stretches 230 inches long, but only carries a 5.8-foot pickup bed. This is because the extra space is devoted to the interior cabin, with 41 inches of front and 39 inches of rear legroom. The half-ton, rear-wheel drive pickup features four regular-sized doors. The front bucket seats and split-folding rear bench hold five passengers. A 295-hp, 5.3-liter single overhead cam V8 and 4-speed automatic average 16/20 mpg and can tow up to 10,100 pounds. Tow hooks come standard, with the option to add a trailer hitch. If you need more power, a 6.0-liter, 345-hp V8 is available.

Other than its larger cabin, the 2008 Sierra 1500 SLT Crew Cab offers the same standard equipment as the SLT Extended. It tacks on leather upholstery, heated front seats, power front seats with driver's memory, wheel-mounted cruise and audio controls for the CD changer/MP3 player, mirrors with turn signals and a reverse-tilt feature, and a trip computer to what you get on the SLE2. This includes full power features, remote entry, heated extendable mirrors, a security system, a front power outlet, tilt steering, intermittent wipers, and leather trim. Satellite radio, a sunroof, and automatic climate control are available extras, and the Crew Cab adds a DVD player to the options list.

Riding on 17-inch alloy wheels and all-season tires (20-inch alloys are optional), this pickup keeps safety features to a minimum. Standard equipment includes dual front airbags, a front stabilizer bar, and 4-wheel ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution. An adjustable suspension and locking rear differential can be added to the short and long arm front and solid live axle rear suspension. Over in the lighting department, you'll find an auto-dimming rearview mirror and side mirrors, automatic headlights, and foglights. OnStar, skid plates, and traction control are also available.

2006 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT Extended Cab 5.8 ft. SB

The 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT Extended Cab 5.8 represents a significant upgrade from the SLE trims. Though it runs on the same 295-hp, 16-valve V8 and 4-speed automatic, this rear-wheel drive pickup focuses as much on passenger comfort as on utility. The first noticeable difference is front bucket seats in place of the bench, reducing passenger load from six to five. The second row bench split-folds, and because the Extended Cab is not full-size, only offers 33.7 inches of legroom. The 134-inch wheelbase accommodates a 5.8-foot bed. Tow hooks are standard and a trailer hitch costs extra.

Significant upgrades to the standard equipment include power front seats with driver's memory settings, wheel-mounted and rear audio controls, a 6-CD changer with radio data, a trip computer, leather upholstery, and heated front seats. These join full power features, heated extendable mirrors, tilt and power steering, intermittent wipers, a temperature display and compass, remote entry, cruise control, a front power outlet, and new MP3 input jack. A sunroof, automatic climate control, and a manual rear window are optional.

On the safety side, the 2006 Sierra 1500 SLT Extended features side mirrors with turn signals, a reverse tilt function, and auto-dimming capability. The 17-inch wheels are now alloy and hold all-season tires. Dual front airbags, 4-wheel ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, and a front stabilizer bar earn three and four stars in crash tests. Also standard are automatic headlights, foglights, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Options add traction control, a locking rear differential, adjustable suspension, OnStar, and larger 20-inch wheels.

2006 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT Extended Cab 8 ft. LB

The 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT Extended Cab LB adds 19 inches to its length and 14 inches to its wheelbase, making room for an 8-foot bed on this rear-wheel drive pickup. The Extended moniker means it seats five in two rows (front bucket, rear bench) that both split-fold. It has four doors, but the rear ones are not full-size and are reverse-hinged. The SLT adds manual rear quarter windows, and a manual rear window opening onto the bed is optional. The bed comes with tow hooks, but can be outfitted with a trailer hitch. With the 295-hp, 5.3-liter V8 that delivers 335 ft-lbs of torque, the pickup can tow up to 8000 pounds. A 4-speed automatic is the only transmission. A flex fuel version of this engine is available.

Dressed up with a chrome grille and bumpers, the 2006 Sierra 1500 SLT Extended LB receives only average ratings in crash tests. Riding on a short and long arm front and solid live axle rear suspension, the SLT adds mirrors with turn signals, an auto-dimming function on all mirrors, and alloy wheels to the safety profile. This includes 17-inch wheels with all-season tires, dual front airbags, front disc and rear drum brakes, 4-wheel ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution, automatic headlights, foglights, halogen lamps, and reverse-tilt mirrors. You can boost the features by adding optional 20-inch wheels, an adjustable suspension, locking rear differential, and OnStar.

The SLT is the high-end trim of the bunch, barring the fully equipped Denali. Power front seats come with driver's memory settings. Other upgrades include wheel-mounted and backseat audio controls, a 6-CD changer with MP3 input, leather upholstery, heated seats, and a trip computer. These join the full power features, heated mirrors, remote entry, cruise control, intermittent wipers, a compass and temperature display, front power outlet, a security system, and tilt and power steering. A sunroof costs extra, as does satellite radio.

2006 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT Extended Cab 6.5 ft. SB

With nearly ten more inches in overall length and wheelbase, the 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT Extended Cab SB offers a longer 6.5-foot pickup bed. The interior seats five, with front bucket seats and a second row bench. The rear passenger doors are half-size and do not open independently of the front ones. As such, legroom is limited to under 34 inches for backseat passengers.

The rear-wheel drive pickup makes up for this with loads of standard features. Leather upholstery, heated front seats, power front seats with driver's memory settings, a trip computer, and both wheel-mounted and rear audio controls for the 6-CD changer and MP3 player are SLT upgrades. Already standard are leather trim, power windows, locks, and extendable heated mirrors, intermittent wipers, a security system, a compass and temperature display, and a front power outlet. The few options remaining include automatic climate control, a sunroof, and a manual rear window.

Under the hood of this family-size pickup is a 5.3-liter V8 that gets 295-hp and 335 ft-lbs of torque at 4000 RPM. With the 4-speed automatic, the powertrain gets 16/20 mpg and can tow up to 10,400 pounds with the optional trailer hitch. Two hooks cost extra. Dual front airbags include passenger airbag deactivation, and the 4-wheel ABS comes with electronic brakeforce distribution. Traction control is optional, but no side curtain airbags are available. In the lighting department, you'll find automatic headlights, halogen lamps, foglights, auto-dimming mirrors, and mirrors with turn signals. OnStar, an adjustable suspension, and a locking rear differential are available add-ons.
