For its second model year, the Chrysler 300 SRT-8 added a tire-pressure monitor as a standard feature. A new 13-speaker Kicker sound system and DVD player were available as options. Chrysler sought a balance between luxury and performance with most of the 300 series, but in the case of the SRT, most attention was directed to the latter.
The 6.1 liter Hemi V-8 was hard to ignore, especially at 4000 rpms. This monstrous power plant provided the SRT with 425 horsepower and 420 pound feet of torque. With a 0-60 time of 4.7 seconds and a quarter mile mark of 13.2, the SRT was the fastest Chrysler product aside from the Dodge Viper, in spite of its aerodynamics. The Hemi was mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission, and all SRTs were rear wheel drive. Beyond the high sticker price and gas guzzler tax, payment would continue at the pump: 14/19 mpg.
The SRT comes equipped with gripping 20-inch tires and powerful Brembo brakes. The 60 to 0 mph stopping distance is just 106 feet. The ride quality and handling is further enhanced by five-link independent rear suspension and a short-long arm front assembly, aided by Chrysler's Electronic Stability Program. That translates to a fine balance between sports performance and ride comfort, according to most drivers.
