Chrysler introduced an all new 300 in 2005, as the well-known and well-traveled nameplate reemerged on this muscular full size sedan. With the arrival of the 300, Chrysler retired both the Concorde and the popular 300m. The cab-forward design that had marked Dodge and Chrysler styling for the last decade was also retired. Clearly.
This base model was the first tier of many trim levels, and while pricer 300s were available with AWD and a 5-speed automatic transmission, the base could only be had with rear wheel drive and a four-speed. The 300 was powered by a 2.7 liter V-6, which provide 190 horsepower and 190 pound feet of torque. The 3700 pound sedan had a EPA rating of 21/28 mpg, but it progressed from 0 to 60 in just over ten seconds.
The Chrysler reputation had been plagued by build quality and reliability issues for some time, and the first 300 owners faced similar problems. There were frequent complaints about excessive interior wear, especially regarding the floor carpeting. A suspension system borrowed from the past Mercedes E-Class offer a smooth ride, and drivers found the gas mileage very reasonable for a car with such bulk. This base 300 offered buyers an affordable way to get behind the wheel this head-turning new sedan.

The 2006 Chrysler 300 Touring went unchanged in its second model year. The 300 series had been totally reinvented for 2005, as the cab-forward body vanished in favor of a look very reminiscent of British super-luxury cars like Bentley and Rolls Royce. While its shape may have been inspired by overseas design, the 300 was unmistakably American.
The Touring 300 would utilize a larger V6, upgrading from 2.7 to 3.5 liters. The new V6 brought this more upscale 300 a 60 horsepower increase, from 190 to 250. Torque was given the same boost: from 190 to 250 pound-feet. The Touring 300's engine was paired with the same 4-speed automatic used by the base model, but AWD was now available. The rear-wheel-drive Touring had slightly better fuel efficiency, at 19/27 mpg. While all 300s are built off the Chrysler LX platform, a close derivative of the Mercedes E-Class, the Touring model softened suspension for a more forgiving ride.
Owners of the 300 Touring model were spread across the spectrum of the value question. Many claimed that this was the best value they had ever found in a car. Others felt that the limited 2006 recall of this model was more representative of their entire 300 experience. Some reported averaging a significant service trip every 2-3 months within the first two years of ownership.

This was the second offering of Chrysler's entirely redesigned 300. The full size sedan was available in a variety of trims, but many were discontinued for the second year. The C and Touring trims remained. This version provided some additional luxuries, fog lamps, and yaw control (which regulates torque distribution between axles).
The Touring 300 falls between the base model and the C with respect to both price and performance. This version upgrades the base 2.7 liter V-6 to a 3.5 liter V-6, which brings substantial boosts in horsepower (190 up to 250), and torque (190 up to 250 lb-ft). Fuel efficiency suffers, down from 21/29 mpg to 18/24, but that's not too drastic considering the added inclusion of an all-wheel drive type. Extra powers pulls the 0-60 acceleration down below 10 seconds, but the C is the true performance model.
The 300's nimble handling for a 4000 pound sedan has won it much acclaim. The Touring model also uses a slightly softer suspension for a more cushioned road feel, which is helpful on long trips.Again, reliability and build quality are the most prevalent issues for owners. The rubber-like buttons and interior pieces draw a lot of criticism, as they look cheap and serve as dust magnets. Interior and exterior rattles are also cited as ongoing nags, further complicated by their reoccurrence, even after a service trip.

The high performance C version of the 300 returned unchanged in 2006. It's powerful and striking appearance had quickly elevated the 300 to the top of Chrysler sales, and prospective C buyers were even placed on a waiting list. While styling is essentially the same across the 300 line, this trim is marked by what's under its hood.
The 300C is powered by a 5.7 liter Hemi V-8, boasting 340 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. The Hemi is paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission, and suspension is stiffened a bit beyond some of the other models. This 300 is tuned for performance. The 4000+ pound sedan speeds from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds and through the quarter mile in 14. Fuel economy is rated at 19/25 mpg, a considerable dip below the V-6 models.
Along with style, performance and power are the most frequently praised attributes of the 300C. Drivers have commented that the sports tuned suspension, adjusted from the prior Mercedes Benz E-Class, allows for great handling and road awareness. The higher-priced C adds an abundance of features and options, including a premium sound system, Bluetooth, and park assist. The build quality of interior fixtures has continued to bring complaints, which are often directed at the flimsy feeling and finicky nature of power controls.

The 300C was poised to compete, performance-wise, with many of the European offerings, but its build quality and reliability continued to raise doubts about overall value.
This AWD version of the C saw a slight drop in fuel efficiency from its RWD twin, down from 19/25 to 18/24 mpg. The all-wheel drive system had been borrowed from the retired Mercedes E-Class 4-Matic, along with suspension, steering, transmission, and wiring configuration. The C's 5.7 liter Hemi V-8 further complements the platform with 340 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. The 300C, at over 4000 pounds, travels from 0 to 60 in about 6 seconds.
Owners and reviewers are in unison with their praise for this Chrysler accomplishment: a fusion of breathtaking power and all-wheel-drive security into this distinguished-looking full size sedan. The 300C receives a substantially higher sticker price than most of its kin, but an array of luxury features have also been added. All 300 models are often criticized for reliability issues. Most problems are small, but nagging enough to force a service stop. Mechanical failures of the trip computer were frequent in this model.
