The LS is the entry level coupe in the Cobalt lineup. The LS sedan houses a 2.2 liter inline four, which produces 145 horsepower and 155 pound-feet of torque. Buyers have a choice between a five-speed manual or an optional four-speed automatic transmission.
Standard features include a CD audio system, air conditioning, a split-folding rear seat, a height-adjustable driver seat and 15-inch wheels. Options are minimal here, but antilock brakes are an available safety feature. However, the LS models are the only Cobalts which are not available with OnStar. Despite some safety feature limitations, even this entry-level trim scored very well in crash tests.
While the coupes have been praised for solid acceleration, a refined ride and powerful brakes, there is a number of low-grade materials and virtually no interior storage space.

The SS is a new trim for the coupe this year.
The sporty SS upgrades to a more powerful version of the 2.4 liter four-cylinder engine which powers the LS, LT and LTZ. This more potent power plant makes 171 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque, and is mated to a five-speed manual transmission. The SS gains special body molding, a sport-tuned suspension, 17-inch alloy wheels and a rear spoiler. Both SS models also include a faux aluminum interior trim.
The SS coupe's suspension creates a more solid feel through turns, as this system minimizes a lot of the body roll reviewers have complained about on the LS, LT and LTZ.

The Cobalt SS is a new trim for the 2006 model year.
The SS represents the fourth tier in the 2006 lineup, upgrading to a more potent version of the 2.4 liter four-cylinder engine found in the lower trims. This enhanced power plant makes 171 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque, and is mated to the same five-speed manual transmission. Other performance-oriented upgrades include sport-tuned suspension, 17-inch alloy wheels and a rear spoiler. The SS is also differentiated from the lower trims by unique exterior trim and fascias.
Reviewers note that the SS offers a tighter feel especially through sharp turns, as the retuned suspension eliminates much of the body roll that drivers will experience with the lower trims. The same steering system is included here however.

The LTZ is a new upper level trim for the 2006 model year, replacing 2005's LT. LTZ upgrades include leather seats and a premium seven-speaker Pioneer sound system. This upscale trim is also differentiated from the LS and LT by appearance enhancements like chrome trim and 16-inch alloys wheels. Reviewers have noted that the LTZ offers a much pleasant interior environment than the lower level trims, due to the inclusion of higher quality materials.
Like the LS and LT, the LTZ is powered by 2.2 liter inline four cylinder engine, which provides 145 horsepower and 155 pound-feet of torque. However, the four-speed automatic transmission is standard here. There is no coupe body style available with the LTZ trim.
