2005 Volkswagen Jetta GLS TDi Review
ProsAmazing fuel economy, 650 miles on a single tank of fuel, solid feel, nice materials, full size spare tire. Diesel engines last a long, long time. ConsLousy headlights, those rotten Bosch components, pathetic "premium" stereo, poor reliability, so-so paint, the VW service experience, automatic transmisson. (That's not to say it's unreliable. It's a made-in-Japan Tiptronic unit that will probably outlive most of the rest of the car. . . I just don't like automatics.)

Amazing Fuel Economy, Solid Feel, Strong Engine, Quality Materials. — This car is a series of compromises. It's just a bit too small for my family, but is solid and safe. The diesel engine puts out a ton of torque, which is great on the highway, and returns between 37 and 44 mpg for us. (With 100 petro-diesel we get 44, and with 100 biodiesel we get 37-38. Various blends of "dino" diesel and biodiesel yield fuel economy in between those two extremes.) The interior materials are high quality, as is the switchgear, but as with all my Audis in the past, the Bosch components are rubbish. In the first 30,000 miles, I had to replace three of the four glow plugs (a diesel engine component), and two brake light switches. The Panasonic-sourced stereo is crap, to put it bluntly. And this is the Monsoon, the "premium", optional stereo. Oh, I'm on the second one. The first one died. The rear brakes make a groaning noise when you apply them when backing up, and the rear wheel bearings make noise going backward too. All this started just before or right around 30,000 miles. There's a silver-dollar sized spot on the hood where the clearcoat failed. VW won't give me an answer about fixing it.

Prosit's damn near perfect. Consupgrading performance and styling doesn't come cheap.

It's Awesome. Def The Best I've Owned. — in performance I will say stock it was sporty and fun. with the add-ons it was very fun. with just exhaust intake and APR software it bumped up the power from 180hp to 240hp and almost 300ft/lbs of torque. not to mention stock bilstein shocks and sport springs for excellent handling. in appearance it was almost perfect. stock 18in. BBS wheels, stock Votex lip kit. Recaro seats and aluminum interior trim. it was damn near perfect. Cost was a factor. being a german car everything for it was expensive. the cheapest real mod done to the car was the $220 diverter valve. but on the bright side with the tuning done and with reasonable driving I scored almost 35mpg and when running full force on 20psi of boost it got a reasonable 17mpg. and finally the fun factor...you could be in the worst mood possible and get in this car and as soon as you've started going your troubles are gone. whether you like cruising. drag racing, track racing, or even top end runs. this car is ready to impress. Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)

Jetta Gli Lovers — I will own this car for ever. Geat acceleration stops on a dime, sweet handling. I have not spent a penny on repairs with 37000 miles on her. The 1.8t GLI package only came out in 2004 and 2005 and it's the best looking Jetta ever built. Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.) |
