The 2005 Toyota Corolla has received a slight face lift, with noticeable changes made to both the front end and the tail lights. New options include side-curtain airbags, stability control, and a premium JBL sound system.
Toyota has also added a fourth Corolla variation for 2005: the performance-focused XRS. The XRS is similar in appearance to the S trim, but several key mechanical enhancements have been added. A firmer sport suspension replaces the standard setup, and a more potent version of the 1.8 liter engine provides some additional horsepower.
This 1.8 liter inline four now generates 170 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque, and is further enhanced by a special Variable Valve Timing and Lift + intelligence system. The former Celica's six-speed manual is the only transmission option. Despite the extra power, fuel efficiency is still quite strong, at 26/34 mpg.
The XRS gets all of the S trim's equipment, including the body kit, rear spoiler, fog lights, and smoked headlamps. other upgrades include 16-inch alloy wheels, cruise control and a tire pressure monitor.
