2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder

With little changed for 2005, this two door, four (almost) seat roadster comes in three flavors: GS, GT, and GTS. The GS comes with a 147-hp 4L engine that mates to either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. The GT and GTS performance options feature a 3.0-liter V6 that spins out 210-hp and mates with either a 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission.

Naturally, reviewers preferred the V6 models for their sportier performance. However, they did not enjoy the small back seats, which one owner even claimed are for insurance purposes only! Standard safety equipment includes front airbags, front side-impact airbags and front-seat side curtain airbags. The standard ABS brakes feature Electronic Brake-force Distribution, which balances front/back brake force allocation in emergency stops. Gas mileage: city â?? 20-23 mpg; highway â?? 29-31 mpg. One owner claimed 31.2 mpg highway with the 4 cylinder.

Most owners cited the Spyderâ??s high fun to low cost factor as the most significant reason for buying it. Most praised the lack of wind buffeting with the top down. Yet, there was little praise for the interior design and some criticism of the carâ??s lack luster handling. The V6 performs smoothly providing a comfortable overall ride, but reviewers and owners felt that the handling has been toned down compared to past models.
