Equipped with automatic full-time AWD, this midsize luxury SUV seats six or seven people and provides extra security in tough climates or tricky driving situations. Now standard with AdvanceTrac and rollover stability control, the AWD system distributes torque 50/50 by default, both front to rear and side to side. The 4.6-liter, 302-hp DOHC V8 gets 300 ft-lbs of torque and tows up to 7,100 pounds when fully loaded with the camper/towing package. The standard trailer hitch is rated at around 3,400 pounds. Other safety features include dual front-side and side curtain airbags for the first two rows, automatic headlights, a tire monitor, parking sensors, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, foglights, and mirrors with turn signals. Optional xenon HID headlights add extra visibility. Running boards provide easier step-up access to the first two rows. The second-row captain's chairs or optional bench seat flip up for access to the third-row bench. A rear liftgate opens separately from the rear window, and the cargo area holds up to 77 cubic feet with the rear seats folded almost flat. A drawback is that the cargo floor itself is not flat. A standard roof rack expands cargo capacity.
The first two rows come with consoles that contain cupholders and trays, and dual-zone climate control is adjustable from front and back seats. Luxury comfort comes in the form of full power features, 6-way power front seats, and power-adjustable pedals and steering wheel. Creamy leather upholstery adorns the seats, and real wood, satin nickel, and leather trim the dash and doors. Gauges are electroluminescent. Wheel-mounted cruise and audio controls, a CD player, intermittent front and rear wipers, a trip computer, remote entry, garage opener, and security system are also standard. More high-tech gadgets come as options, including a touchscreen navigation system, 6-CD changer, and DVD player. Also available are new 7-spoke 17-inch chrome wheels, a sunroof, and heated and cooled seats. The biggest complaints about the 2005 Aviator STD AWD are its 13/19 mpg fuel-economy estimates and small third row. Otherwise, drivers love the Navigator-like style and luxury with easier driveability.
