This was the final offering of the first generation IS sedan. Although the wagon model would be discontinued, the IS series would split into two engine options and also become available with all wheel drive. For nearly five years, the IS had provided Lexus with a fine combination of price and performance. Unfortunately, stiff competition like the BMW 3-Series and Mercedes C-Class were able to other offer either better performance or more luxury.
The 3.0 liter inline six cylinder engine returned for its fifth and final year in 2005. The engine specs had remained unchanged since 2001, at 215 horsepower and 218 pound-feet of torque. The sedan sped from 0 to 60 in 7.5 seconds, and braked back down to zero in just 115 feet. Since 2002, the IS had been offered as either a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission, but the limited slip differential had been discontinued. All ISs were still rear wheel drive.
For many drivers, the sedan's low profile led to some to some nervous moments on bumping roads. Excessive tire wear was also frequently reported with relatively low mileage. The sport-tuned suspension received mixed reviews: some said it was too stiff for a Lexus while others found it ideal for the sporting image.
