2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD Review
ProsAwesome engine, superior 4WD system. ConsOil leaks at rear axle seals at 50k miles, weak hood shocks.

A Great All-around Workhorse — This is my 7th Jeep, and 5th Grand Cherokee. The 4.0L I6 is great, even if it's not a powerhouse, it's darn near unbreakable. Fuel mileage is excellent for a vehicle of this type. I've gotten as high as 24, and average around 19 MPG. The 4WD system is unbeatable, and it will go thru terrain that would stop other "soccer mom" SUVs dead in their tracks. Overall, I'm very pleased. Primary Use: Commuting to work

ProsStyling, build quality, on- and off-road performance in all weather, comfort for tall people. ConsJeeps all have their own little quirks; this one is no different. It's part of the Jeep thing. The 4.0 motor is bulletproof, and perfectly fine for hauling just the Grand Cherokee around, but with a trailer, owners may find themselves wishing for the V8.

Great All-around Suv — With the Selec-Trac transfer case behind Jeep's tried-and-true 4.0 six-cylinder engine, this is a reliable and extremely capable vehicle. More roomy and comfortable than the previous generation, it's perfect for someone who needs to get to the back forty one weekend, then haul a family of four the next.

Would Absolutely Buy Another! — Safe, economical, comfortable vehicle. Excellent in all weather, spacious cargo area and convenient interior. Performs great, it's a no-nonsense vehicle great for family transportation to school, work, etc. as well as long road trips, state to state. Have loved this car!! ConsA/C little weak for the rear passangers on a 45deg day

Great Car. — Like riding on a cushion, very plush suspension and handles the rough stuff just as well. The A/C is a little loud when up full speed to try and cool the passengers in the back seat. Especially in the Middle East when the temp hits 45+. The passengers say that it doesn't reach them or cool them enough with out it being up full speed, which sounds like a jumbo coming in to land. But that is the only fault I could say the car has, looks great handles better. Primary Use: Family transportation

ProsSpace, size, and cost ConsMaintenance isn't cheap, and Jeeps require quite a bit of it

Family Vehicle, A Must. — Most of the reviews I have read claim that this Jeep only gets 19 to 21 MPG but when I have checked my computer it said 32.8 MPG. I have yet to find a decent site with some information. Its a great family vehicle, and handling isnt bad at all. Reliability isn't a huge issue but isn't a issue that should be ignored at all, it requires (as all vehicles) care. Primary Use: Commuting to work

My 4th Jeep — This is my 4th Jeep and I have owed it the longest. Its always been reliable with no major mechanical break downs since I have owned it. I change the oil on a regular basis and have replaced all four tires and shocks as well as updating to cross drilled and slotted rotors. Primary Use: Commuting to work

ProsLooks, 4wd, luxury, V8 power, radio (10 disc changer, sirius satellite) Consheavy, gas mileage, top heavy (what SUV isn't)
115
A Typical Jeep Now W/ Luxury — Performance is brisk with the V8, but since the car is so heavy is seems burdened at some points. Gas mileage is dismal, but you know what you are getting into when you buy a car like that. In my 16 months of ownership, both rear axles have leaked. I have gotten on fixed and will soon get the other fixed. If you do not have a warranty, this will cost you around $500 at any Jeep certified dealer. I absolutely love the curved yet sculpted lines of the Grand Cherokee. The clean halogen headlights are great. The chrome is a nice accent to the car without overdoing it. The 4wd capability is wonderful. I have the Quadra-Drive system and it makes driving in snow, fun. This car exudes luxury from the carpets to the dash. The materials used on the interior are right on in all the right places. However, some cheap plastic bits still give the Grand Cherokee that old school rugedness that so many people like. This car certainly has upsides and downsides. However, one thing does put it above so many other SUVs. That is...the Jeep badge. People can almost tell what kind of person you are by the car that you drive. Driving a Jeep says that you are concerned about utility, comfort (if you drive a Grand Cherokee) and that you enjoy the power you find under the hood of the car. It says that you don't take yourself too seriously. It shows that with you, "what you see is what you get." Primary Use: Family transportation

ProsLots of power in the High Output engine and acceleration is good. Extremely comfortable to enter/exit and drive. More than adequate for off road travel, as well. ConsNone. I like everything about this vehicle!

Grand Cherokee, The All Around Vehicle — Love the style, the power and the acceleration. Handling could be better, but it is NOT a sports car. Bought it used from a dealer who didn't disclose everything. Had to involve the Ohio state's attorney general to get a settlement. Bu the vehicle (once I had the problems repaired) has proves to be competent both on and off road. MPG is not great, but for a 2 ton, 4WD SUV, it's better than most. And a 6,500# towing capacity makes it very useful! Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros9 year old SUV and still cleans up like new, even though used in construction and hauling materials on a limited basis. Popular silver/charcoal color. Never got stuck, even in mud. ConsFuel mileage not real good, even with V6 (15/19 MPG), but offset with towing and cargo capability, plenty of power and 4WD.

Great Mid-size 4wd Executive Work Vehicle. — The classic lines and of the 2004 Grand Cherokee were not as strong in future years. Cleans up easily and shows off great. Every time it is detailed, people think I have a much newer vehicle. Great power seats, leather has held up very well and comfortable. Sound system is great. luggage racks are practical and useful. Excellent replacement for a truck. Window tint keeps out Florida heat. Repairs have been minimal. Had bumpers re-painted and made a great upgrade to overall look. Primary Use: Utility (towing boats, transporting cargo, etc.) |
