Chrysler has continued to expand and alter the PT Cruiser lineup from year to year, but this base model has remained largely untouched. For 2004, it is now only available with a five-speed manual transmission.

The PT Base model offers eager buyers a comparatively affordable route to owning this popular compact wagon, and it is offered at about $8000 less than the most upscale trim. The roster of standard items has not expanded much since 2001. Highlights are power windows, a CD audio system, tilt wheel, air conditioning, and intermittent wipers. The Touring is closest in price to the Base, and it features a considerable number of additional amenities.

The PT Cruiser Base model is powered by the original 2.4 liter DOHC inline four, which provides 150 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. With this engine, the PT will make an epic journey from 0 to 60 in just under eleven seconds. The modest power supply does not offer much of a fuel economy benefit: mixed driving MPG averages for all models are in the low 20s.

Owners have continued to praise the PT for its distinctive styling and highly configurable interior arrangements. Poor fuel economy tops the list of complaints.

The PT Cruiser lineup has continued to grow in 2004, but this second tier Touring model remains unchanged. The Touring can be had for just a slight increase in price over the Base model, but several additional features have been added.

The Touring comes standard with all the Base features, and also adds fog lamps, cruise control, keyless entry, tinted glass, 16-inch alloy wheels, an anti-theft system, and power mirrors. Buyers in need of some additional convenience will find this model to be a much better value than the modestly priced entry-level PT.

This model is kept on the lower end of the PT's price spectrum because it is also powered by the meekest of three engine options. A 2.4 liter DOHC inline four supplies 150 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, and is mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy is estimated at 22/29 mpg, and mixed driving mpg averages are reported in the high teens and low twenties. In this respect, the PT falls significantly short of most compact competitors.

The 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser Limited is one of just three models to retain the very modestly powered 2.4 liter inline four engine. However, for this model year Chrysler has added a new turbo option for both the Touring and Limited trims. Also new this year exclusively on the Limited is the Chrome Accent Group option package, which adds a chrome fuel door, chrome exterior trim, and a metallic finished shifter and pedals.

The Limited is similarly equipped to the less expensive Touring trim, but a few additions set the two apart. Both come standard with fog lamps, anti-theft, cruise control, full power accessories, privacy glass, and a CD/cassette audio system. The Limited adds a power moon roof, leather seating, chrome wheels, a power driver's seat and side airbags.

The Limited PT is powered by the original 2.4 liter DOHC four cylinder engine, which generates 150 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission comes standard with this engine option, and fuel economy is estimated at 22/29 mpg.

The new turbocharged engine is a $1200 option, for those who'd like to travel from 0 to 60 mph in less than ten seconds.

In 2004, Chrysler offered a six-model Platinum Series to commemorate twenty years of great success in the minivan market. However, the special package was not limited to the Town & Country. It was also offered on the Sebring coupe, Sebring convertible, Sebring sedan, 300M, and the PT Cruiser. This finish may only be applied to the PT's Limited trim level.

All models were offered in three color choices: Graphite Metallic, Bright Silver Metallic and Brilliant Black Crystal. In addition to the Platinum Series badges, each model also receives exclusive upgrades like chrome/Platinum-clad wheels and silver bezels.

The PT Cruiser Platinum comes with a six-disc CD changer, Sirius satellite radio, chrome side moldings, a special leather and chrome accented steering wheel, a satin silver shifter and two-tone leather seating. All of the Limited features are also here: fog lamps, keyless entry, full power accessories, a power driver's seat, cruise control, tinted windows, and a power moon roof.

The PT Limited Platinum is powered by the new 2.4 liter DOHC turbocharged inline four, which provides 180 horsepower and 210 pound-feet of torque. A four-speed automatic transmission is standard on this model.

The PT Cruiser first appeared in 2001, and Chrysler has continued to add to the lineup each year. In 2003 a GT model debuted, as one of two new models with a much more potent power plant. There are no changes to this trim for 2004.

The GT is powered by a turbocharged version of the 2.4 liter DOHC inline four cylinder engine, which provides the foundation for every PT Cruiser power plant. This enhanced engine delivers 220 horsepower and 245 pound-feet of torque, launching the 3100 pound compact wagon from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.7 seconds. A Getrag five-speed manual is the only transmission option with this engine. Fuel economy is actually slighty higher here than the with new 180 horsepower variant, at 21/27 verses 19/26 mpg.

The GT is the second highest priced PT Cruiser, and a myriad of standard features accompany the turbocharged engine. The GT comes equipped with fog lamps, a power moon roof, 17-inch alloy wheels, an anti-theft system, a power driver's seat, cruise control, full power accessories, keyless entry, leather seats, privacy glass and a rear spoiler. Chrysler has also added some additional safety items: four-wheel ABS, traction control and front-side airbags.

The PT Cruiser lineup has grown from five to eight models for 2004, thanks to the addition of a new turbocharged engine option and special Platinum Series trim. The Dream Cruiser remains as the PT's most upscale model. This is now the third series of this limited production model.

The Dream Cruiser combines many of the most desirable attributes of the seven lower models, including the turbocharged engine and an array of luxury and convenience features.

The Dream Cruiser comes standard with fog lamps, heated front seats, keyless entry, a power moon roof, 17-inch chrome wheels, traction control, ABS, anti-theft, leather seats, a power driver's seat, cruise control, a six-disc CD changer, Sirius satellite radio, and a rear spoiler. Many of these feature, like traction control, 17-inch wheels, and the rear spoiler are only standard on this model and the GT.

The Dream Cruiser is one of two PT Cruisers to be powered by the most enhanced version of the mainstay 2.4 liter inline four. This power plant has now been tweaked for 220 horsepower and 245 pound-feet of torque, and it is paired with a five-speed manual transmission on this model. Both the GT and Dream Cruiser speed from 0 to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds.

While the Dream Cruiser is certainly subject to the same Chrysler reliability and build quality issues suffered by the rest of the PT family, there are far more distractions on this model. Overall, that has led to much more positive reviews.
