Pros

Fun to drive, as much space as many SUVs, great handling

Cons

Bad Gas Mileage for a 4-cylinder, typical VW electronic problems

This Car Is Beast. — This is my first car, and it has got to be one of the greatest cars you could ever have for your first car. It is relatively simple, fun to drive, has lots of options, legroom, space in the boot, looks great, and is a Volkswagen. Mine has a 4-cylinder 1.8 Turbo engine, which is great, but doesn't get the gas mileage you expected for a 4-cylinder (Expect 27 Highway, 18 City). Overall, an amazing car. It's got that Volkswagen feel of solidity when you drive it. Also, although you can see plenty of VW Passats around town, I've seen very, very few wagons. I like the looks of the car, but what really makes the Passat wagon look great is simply the rarity of it. I love my Passat.

Something The Germans Got Right... — Safe, comfortable, well built and fast. Quality car. Accelerates well though not as well as a petrol. Braking is excellent & it handles well. Nice classy looking car - inside and out. Fairly economical and low maintenance. Not as fun as a sports car but great as a nippy and safe family car.

Pros

It picks up and goes, the interior leather is amazing

Cons

the check engine light always comes on and goes off, it has a minor oil leak

Good — I got this car because it is unlike any American made car. The design is completely different, inside and out and it is very sturdy, unlike many crappy fords... The maintenance I've noticed it's very cheap, especially when you have an oil leak. The best place to drive this car is on the interstate because it is the smoothest.

I Bought Car Used @ 55k, In Two Years I've Driven 50k With Barely A Blip - I Love This Car. — Have had problems with acceleration ever since hitting 70k - there is a lot of jerking. There has been a consistent squeaking in my heater. Also, at one point my signal wouldn't go off that that a door was open - an electrical problem and costly fix. That being said, I am in my car for 5 - 9 hours a day so relatively speaking, I have had very few issues. The car is a blast to drive and very stylish. I feel safe driving it, even in snow, because it is very solid. This is a perfect car for someone who does a lot of driving (good gas mileage, comfortable) and wants safety. My first VW experience has been a positive one.

Good Car But It's Aging. — too bad it's too old and aging. B5.5 put VW a step behind BMW or AUDI. The 130 hp TDI was sporty, reliable, fun to drive. The design of the car was unique back in early 2001. My favorite. Resell value was pretty good. I had a few problems with this car, but since it was a second hand car i ll skipp this remark. The build quality was good. Car only had 4 airbags, but it felt solid and safe. ABS and ESP good points. Had some issues with the ESP.. i was the king of the road. A fast car.

1.8 T Is It Really Worth The Expense And Upkeep , To Drive A Namesake? — After looking at all the receipts, gas tickets, tire expense and special order parts.I think that next time,I hope to find a better candidate for bringing something back to life, that has either been worked on incorrectly by a lame mechanic,or just been neglected. And thats hard to find in todays economy.People are territorial, and tend to drive the__________,out of thier cars!

Just about everything was awesome, to me. A wise price to pay for German engineering.

Cons

My only complaint about Volkswagen has been my service experience at the dealer.

This Was A Great Car For Me. — I loved this car - it's why I bought another one. This car was nothing more than a base model GL, but there were lots of features that came standard that in my opinion elevated it to something special. I've replaced it with a 2007 Passat Wagon 3.6L 4MOTION that has everything but navigation. The creature comforts would cost several thousand more in any other German brand.
