ProsReliable, good tow vehicle for 8 x 10 trailer or less Consmileage isn't terrific, rides like a truck

2003 Ford Ranger Fx4 Level 2 — The little truck has never let me down. 87000 miles. Recommend highly. Great torquey V6 for pulling trailers. Surprises people how quick it is. Fun for rice burners with 31 inch all terrains on it. Mileage is ok, drive the speed limit it gets 17 or 18. Drive 70 or above, 15 or less.

Prosgas mileage, looks, size Consinterior space

Gas Mileage — gas mileage is great considering i have the I-4 with a 5 speed manual transmission, but it aint big enough for a family. the overall size is great for maneuverability. it does look pretty good although i did add a few upgrades. if your a DIYer the spark plugs are a pain, but the oil is real easy to change.

My Ranger. — It drinks gas! its turning radius sucks. ITS SMALL! im not. im 6'4'' and my knee hits the window/mirror switches. put your foot down and it will go... so I give it credit there. there is something wrong with it... dealership cant fix it, told me wait till it gets worse.

ProsGood fuel economy when towing. 4 wheel Drive is adequate for off-road conditions and 4 wheel low range suplies tremendous tourque for a midsized truck. Relatively simple and inexpensive to maintain. No major suprises or issues since I've owned new for 93,000 miles. ConsIncluded Running Boards rust too easily, fuel economy could be better, but seems competitive for the mid-sized 4x4 truck market. Even with 4.10 ration limited-slip rear axle the rear tires are very easy to spin on wet pavement with All Terrain Tires, I've never tested this with standard radials which would likely perform better. The clear coating on the aluminum wheels wears off or cracks making cleaning or repairing difficult or impossible for the average owner. Rear Jump seats are useful only as a last resort.

Best Mid-sized 4x4 Truck I've Owned, But Would Buy Full Size In The Future — I have been a very pleased owner of the XLT 4.0L V6 SuperCab 4x4 Ranger. I do not have experience with other versions of this truck which are many. I purchased the vehicle new from the dealer and have owned it for 93,000 miles, mostly garaged. I took the vehicle off road about one every 2 weeks, but did not heavily load it frequently. I purchased the Ford Workshop Manual to perform nearly all of the vehicle maintenance myself with decent mechanical tallent, but very little experience or any formal mechanical training. I performed nearly all the vehicle maintenance myself and ended up with very reasonable costs of ownership as a result. Parts are readily available for this vehicle both new and used. I previously owned a foriegn vehicle and never will again due to the difficulty and extra expense of obtaining service and parts. The vehicle did experience a leak between the transmission and the transfer case (4x4 drive) which I had repaired by the dealer at a cost for about 1300 dollars. One of the fron wheel bearings went bad at about 70,000 miles which I believe is consitent if not overdue for these vehicles. I replaced both front wheel bearings with Timken bearings and would recomend any owner due the same. Overall I would make the same purchase decision again to buy this vehicle over the competition that was made at the same time in the same price range. Primary Use: Commuting to work

ProsAlmost zero maintenance costs Consbouncey ride

Dependable Ride — 3.0 auto 3.73; nice acceleration, solid braking excellent load carrying ability. Really dependable having almost zero maintenance cost; limited to oil changes, new battery, and now new spark plugs. New tires went on last year, need a new bed cover but that can wait Primary Use: Commuting to work

ProsThey just last and last. ConsThere are no reasons to avoid it that I can think of.

If You Want Something That Is Well Made And Will Last Then Consider A Ranger. — This is my 3rd Ranger. My first one I drove for 100,00 miles. My second Ranger was a 1990 that I drove 225,000 miles. Is there any wonder that I bought another one in 2003? I'm 68 years old with bad health. This will be the last truck I will ever need. Primary Use: Utility (towing boats, transporting cargo, etc.)

Pros4.0 makes driving it fun Consgeneric design

A Great Truck For The Buck — I Like the Ford Ranger. I have the 4.0 SOHC V6 with a 5 speed manual 4X4. it has good power, i tow a 4,000 lb camping trailer and it does fine. i have 46,000 miles on it and have had no trouble with it yet. there is a squeak in the dash that is bothersom but overall interior is well built. the exterior is ok, the sheetmetal seems a little flimsy in spots but have had no rust or parts brakeing yet. I get about 22 mpg avg (not towing). i do enjoy driving it, the 5 speed with the 4.0 makes for a good time. Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.) |
