2003 FIAT Punto Review
ProsNippy, great styling, well specced for a small car. ConsA few common faults that bring it down

Hgt Abarth — This is the 1.8 HGT Abarth model. The 1.8 16v engine is responsive, puts out a decent amount of power(in the region of 130bhp) and a good amount of torque. Brakes are pretty effective stopping the car quickly though the handling could be better...it feels a little unstable throwing it too hard into corners. The build quality isn't the best Fiat ahve ever done...there are a few common problems related to this such as wiper linkage and minor rattles. In terms of appearance the car can't be beaten in my opinion. Italian design, sporty and slightly agressive front end. The car is enhanced by the Abarth kit and alloys making it that little bit more appealing to the eye. Road Tax is high on this car...the 1.8 pumps out a fair amount of fumes compared to other cars in it's class. The insurance is also slightly higher on the Abarth model. Maintenance can be a pain in terms of garage costs, the variator being a particularly high priced part and long job. This is a fun car to drive, copes with fast road driving easily although it could hold a bit better round the curvy bits...the traction control is a bit over sensitive at times but there is the option to turn it off. Built-in sat-nav is useful though can be long-winded to use. Overall a good small car with a nice sized engine! |

Typical Italian Supermini — Great little motor, easyish to insure and great economy. Performance wise, you cant expect much from 60BHP, but she had this illusion to being nippy and fast. Handled like a go-kart and very easy to steer. Fun factor very high! Build wise, well its an Italian car so don't expect much. Car used to rev when idle, common fault with most Fiats! Interior full of very cheap plastic that rattled chronically. Very thin metal made road noise quite bad on motorway journeys. Abysmal OE sound sytem with paper speakers that didn't last five minutes! External appearence fantastic and much better than its rivals. Even the original hubcaps where well designed without trying to imitate alloys. Headlights and rear lights looked perfect! Economy as already mentioned was fantaswtic easily averaging over 40MPG. Maintenaance was fairly easy. In two years of ownership (secondhand) car needed new exhaust backbox, tyres and brakes. Mods done: Exterior: - Debadged rear & wings - Mattig Tuning badgeless grille - Crystal side repeaters Chassis: - '03 Punto Sporting Alloys - Kumho Rubber Interior: - '05 Punto ActiveSport seats & door cards - Punto Sporting Centre console, and airvents - Aftermarket gearknob - Metallic silver speedo surround - Voltmeter fitted in A-pillar - Various parts trimmed in black faux suede ICE: - Sony CD Head Unit - iPod Interface - Fli Active Subwoofer - Alpine Type E midbass and tweeters - Rear speakers removed Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.) |

ProsCheap runabout ConsReliability was bad

Cheap Runabout That Needed Fixing — 2003 Fiat Punto 1.2 16v HLX Power - Light car means the little 1.2 does alright, apparently the 8v version was slow. Looks/Style - Sharp but, not to my taste Maintenance Cost - Plenty of parts out there meaning they are cheap. Back Seats - Not a lot of space for people in the back. Handling - Nimble, but not very stable at higher speeds. Front Seats - No lumbar support but, were hard I like them hard. Reliability - Electric power steering used to fail, could only be reset by turning the car off them on again. Family Car - Not awful, but for something bigger. Fuel Economy - Very good actually, it surprised me. Cargo Capacity - Deep boot meant good space in the back. Overall - Good for a first car for a young driver. Primary Use: Commuting to work |

Good Lil Runner — my fiat is good on performance and can be modified to increase all aspects. rear breaks are abit weak so a disc conversion is highly recomended, this car is fun to drive as you can throw it round corners and maybe get the back end out Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.) |

Nice While Solo/professional — Bad Customer Support. They couldnt fix any of the electronic problems. They couldn't even find them to begin with :P The platform of the processor check-up is Windows 98 fyi.Almost tragic. Unless you have your own mechanic just dont bother. Primary Use: Commuting to work |

My Little Punto — My little car is my batmobile and tardis rolled into one. It is very nippy away from a standing start, power steering is excellent It wasn`t cheap but I love it love it love it.... It`s really good fuel wise, forty quid gets me two weeks driving. Tax is cheap and so is insurance. |
