There are several changes for this third year of PT Cruiser production, including a more powerful engine and the new upscale GT trim level. Unfortunately, only two models come equipped with the turbo-charged 2.4 liter power plant. The Base, Touring, and Limited trims are all unchanged for 2003.
These three lower models retain the 2.4 liter DOHC inline four, which offers a modest power supply of 150 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. This engine is mated to a five-speed manual transmission, and a four-speed automatic is optional. Gas mileage in mixed driving is estimated in the low 20s.
Standard features on this model include 15-inch wheels, front airbags, air conditioning, a CD audio system, power windows and mirrors, intermittent wipers and a rear defroster. Only a few options are offered with this trim level, and currently books for about $5000 less than the top shelf PT.
Higher trim levels provide upscale features or a higher performance engine. On this base model, owners are offered few distractions from Chrysler's nagging mechanical problems and build quality issues. Recurring service stops, even from minor problems, can quickly become very costly. Common issues include excessive brake wear, windshield wiper failure, and a myriad of annoying squeaks and creeks.

A unique blend of classic and modern, the PT Cruiser combines the well-recognized styling of the 1930s Chrysler Airflow with many Dodge Neon components. The result is a relatively affordable one-of-a-kind compact wagon. Many retro imitators would soon follow suit, but in 2003 the PT was still quite distinctive.
The Touring was once a option package, but it became the PT Cruiser's second trim tier in 2002. The Touring model comes equipped with an anti-theft system, fog lamps, 16-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry, heated mirrors, power windows and locks, a rear defroster and tinted glass.
The STD, Limited and Touring models are all powered by the modest 2.4 liter DOHC inline four. This engine produces 150 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, and comes standard with a five-speed manual transmission. A four-speed automatic is optional. Mixed driving fuel economy is estimated in the low 20s.

The Chrysler PT Cruiser is now in its third year of production, and the STD, Touring, and Limited models are carried over from 2002. A new more powerful engine is now available, but it can only be had with the GT or the Dream Cruiser.
The PT Cruiser Limited edition is actually the third of five trim tiers, with respect to price. Both the Dream Cruiser and GT cost significantly more.
The three lower models are powered by a 2.4 liter DOHC inline four, generating 150 horsepower and 162 pound-feet or torque. A four-speed automatic is optional and a five-speed manual transmission comes standard.
The Limited comes equipped with full power accessories, leather upholstery, an anti-theft system, fog lamps, keyless entry, chrome wheels, a lighted entry system, air conditioning, a CD/cassette sound system and cruise control.
The PT Cruiser's versatile interior continues to be a favorite feature. Chrysler claims 26 possible configurations for seating and storage. The low fuel economy for a 3000-pound compact car is a common owner concern.

Style options steadily increased throughout the first five years of PT Cruiser production. In 2003, Chrysler added the GT. This model was offered at a significant price increase beyond the upscale Limited model, and featured a turbo-charged four cylinder engine.
The GT came standard with most of the features included on the Limited and Touring trims, including fog lamps, anti-theft, privacy glass, a CD audio system, cruise control, air conditioning, and keyless entry, and full power accessories. The GT's upgrades include standard ABS, traction control, and 17-inch wheels.
The GT is powered by a turbo-charged version of the 2.4 liter DOHC inline four, which now delivers 215 horsepower and 245 pound-feet of torque. The 65 additional horses reduced the PT's 0-60 time dramatically, from 10.9 to 6.7 seconds. Transmission options were a standard five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic upgrade.
Fuel economy decreases were marginal, and mixed driving MPG averages remained in the low 20s. According to consumers, the GT's performance boost seemed to justify the low fuel economy for a compact car.

The limited production Dream Cruiser variation returned for 2003, with a second series model. The Dream Cruiser was the most expensive PT, and it also received the new GT's more powerful engine.
Again, there were no color choices. Last year's only color, Inca Gold, has been replaced with a new finish called Tangerine Pearlcoat. Thus, this model might not be for everyone. A Dark Slate Grey finish is the only option for the interior.
The Dream Cruiser gets an array of unique touches: a rear spoiler, color-keyed wheel and interior trim, and minor interior layout changes. The Dream Cruiser receives all of the GT's special features, including traction control, 17-inch chrome wheels, and four-wheel ABS. Fog lamps, keyless entry, leather upholstery, full power accessories, anti-theft, a moon roof, and cruise control are also standard.
The Dream Cruiser is one of two 2003 PTs to house the new turbo-charged 2.4 liter inline four, which generates 215 horsepower and 245 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is included, and a four-speed automatic is optional. The turbo-equipped Dream Cruiser speeds from 0 to 60 in just 6.7 seconds, verses 10.9 seconds for the non-turbo models.
