A standard CD player was one of the few new additions to the BMW 530i for 2002. A standard power passenger seat and automatic two-zone climate control, replacing a manual system, were also added to the standard package, as were three new exterior colors.
BMW freshened up the appearance of all it's 5 Series cars with the 2002 model year, including the 530i. Power was provided by a 3.0-liter, double-overhead-cam inline six-cylinder engine that produced 225 horsepower. A five-speed manual transmission was standard, while a five-speed automatic was available as an option.
Standard features included traction control, stability control, anti-lock brakes, dual front airbags, front side airbags, and tubular airbags designed to provide head protection for front passengers.
Other standard features included power windows, power door locks, power heated mirrors, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, a leather-trimmed shift knob, cruise control, a keyless entry system, a trip computer, and 16-inch wheels.
Drivers noted that the 2002 BMW 530i handled well, and provided good performance and a smooth ride. In fact, some considered it to be the ultimate ride. But others found interior room to be limited, and others noted that the options packages were expensive. Oddly, there were also numerous complaints about the flimsy cup holders.
