Hot Hatch — This is by no means a standard Golf. Everyboday knows what Golf mark ones are like and writing anything of such would be stupid. The 1.4 has got a custom fabricated turbo system with watermeth injection which delivers 115kw on the wheels. Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)

Tdi Was 'green' Before 'green' Was. — $17k new in 2001 - 153k miles - 9 years -1 driver. 38 MPG was worst; 52 MPG was best; 43 MPG is typical. Great handling. Consistant performance. Golf TDI's are finally back on the dealer's lots @ about $23k. Think I'll get another as soon as I wear this one out.

Tork Is At 155lb From 1900rpm To 3500!!! — What I like about this car is the tite drive, when I turn corners it goes were I want. I also apreciate the performance of the car, even if it only 90hp I can easily drive 200km/h, overall this car is really fun to drive and it's cheap on fuel, I do about 1100km with 50 bucks :P Primary Use: Commuting to work

Nice Car, Bad Quality — This was a GTI model - nicely equipped and great performance, but lots of issues with build quality (made in Brazil) that finally led me to replace with a Passat. This model generation was the best looking, best overall package, went downhill from there Primary Use: Commuting to work

2001 Volkswagen Golf Iv 1.6l 105 Hp Highline — The most classy Golf ever! The newer Mk V and VI models are for sure good cars, however, they don't appeal to me nearly as much as the Mk IV. This was my first car ever, and was a very pleasant car to own. I actually miss it quite a bit, it would make a sweet "No. 2-car" next to my Volvo V70... ;-)

Buy If U Can Afford Repairs — fun to drive, good torque and hp. very good handling. not that gas consuming. interior very roomy for a hatch. maintenance is expensive when major parts brake. interior has couple of defaults, no car is perfect, but this one was the most fun i had of all. Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)

ProsDiscreet classy sports hatchback that's practical and well built ConsDont avoid buying a looked after example

Very Good Value For Money - Not Fastest Hot-hatch, But Excellent All Rounder — The 1.8t was a fairly quick car in 150bhp form - although this power could be easily re-mapped to over 200bhp for around £300.00. Braking was amazing, but handling in general could have been more sports orientated, however - it was such a good all rounder and a totally capable motorway cruiser. Earlier examples had Recaro interiors which are a really nice touch, there are certain common weak areas of the car such as coilpacks/window regulators, but nothing you cannot sort out with a bit of DIY. Sold mine with over 100k miles and it was still driving like a new car. regularly got over 35mpg Primary Use: Commuting to work
